Advice about Installing European Hinges?
Hi,
I’d like advice/recommendations on installing European hinges.
I’ve finished my cabinet carcases (face-frame cabinets), have my cope-and-stick panel doors done….but am really nervous about installing these Blum hinges.
Seems like the biggest challenge is making sure that the hinge holes in each stile are a uniform distance from the edge. I’ll use a jig on the drill press to insure consisency.
Afterwards, seems like I just need to line up the doors and screw the hinges into the face frame through the back of the cabinet…since the cabinets have no backs yet.
Any experience, advice or encouragement?
Thanks in advance!

Which hinges did you buy? Most of the Blum style hinges screw into the edge of the face frame, unless they're for frameless boxes, in which case they screw into the side of the box. Can you post a picture of a hinge here?
Why through the cabinet back? The Blum hinges I use clip together (the cup part clips to the base).
I know the feeling, however. You put a lot of work into the doors and the last thing you need is to mess up the hinge cup holes. - lol (I did just that a few weeks ago on some oak raised panel doors. Had to make plugs for the cup holes, glue them in and do it over.)
It's actually very easy to do those hinges. I lay out my hole centers and make a "starter hole" with a scratch awl. Then I use a 1-3/8" Forsner bit in a hand held drill. The depth is very slightly less that the depth of the Forsner.
I would suggest that you make a pine "mock-up" of your face frame and one door rail and play with it until you're comfortable with the process.
One other thing you'll like is the adjustments you can make on the hinges. I've found it useful to make sure all the adjustments are "centered" before I install the hinges. That allows adustment either way if you need it.

It sounds like your question concerns attaching the hinge to the door. You have a number of options.
1) Invest an obscene amount of money in a Blum Minipress (nearly 2 grand if I recall)
2) Rockler markets drill guides for Blum hinges in their excellent line of "Jig-It" fixtures. These are precision pieces of lexan with holes in the proper places for use with a centered drill like Vix or Snappy. Other useful fixtures in this line are their shelf hole drilling jig that will give you accurate system holes 32mm apart and 37mm from the front edge of a Euro cabinet. They also have excellent fixtures for the holes for mounting Accuride drawer slides.
3) The down and dirty way. Set the hinges in the 35mm holes you've bored on a drill press. Press a long straight board (or another door) against the top edges of the hinges to align the edges parallel to the edge of the door. Use a centered (Vix) drill to drill the pilot holes. The screw holes for the hinge plates are 37mm back from the back of the door. If you attach the plates to the hinges on one door, you can make a template from thin plywood that gives you the proper spacing and setback.
