Advice? Can this library built-in be transformed?
I have a large wall of narrow
built-in library shelves.
I’m needing desk /
computer workstations for kiddos and husband.
Can these be modified to have deep base storage cabinets and workspace or am I stuck with them as is?
I’d be open to either tying in workstations on far wall or reworking existing if it’s doable. Struggling to find a solution and hoping not to tear them out.
Thank you for any help!

I can see why you don't want to tear them out - a lot of work, though ultimately you may end up doing just that.
It is not particularly difficult to build on deeper frames for storage - your biggest challenges there are notching round the uprights for a top surface and matching the colour.
Even so, I would remove the whole lot and replace with what I want rather than making do, provided I felt confident I could get the crown moulding to match the rest of the room.
Ultimately it is clear you are not using the units for display, rather for storage and paper books are somewhat obsolete so keeping them seems unnecessary - reduce total pain by biting the bullet and going for the rip now.
Thank you- this room is part of a larger update to a 70's suburb update. I'm trying to shave dollars anywhere I can.
You could cut out some of the lower section between uprights and build a deep lower cabinet with knee holes. If the desk surface needed to be wider than a single bay you could either notch around it like rob_ss suggests or cut the vertical at the height of the surface to slide it in.
An alternate approach would be building in flip down desktops. Your office clutter would not be a distraction at mealtimes.
Thank you - it will b just an office space, the dining table is just in there temporarily.
