I’m thinking of buying a vacuum press in order to do my own veneering but don’t want to spend big bucks in the process. Veneer systems Inc has a 1 cfm system for around $500.00. Does anyone have any advice?

Go to joewoodworker.com and find out how you can build one. That is what I did, and it works great.
Check out Harbor Freights vacuum pump prices.

My suggestion would be first to decide the maximum size piece you would like to press. If you want to press something longer than 4', I'd be very concerned whether a 1 cfm pump would be sufficient. Seems like it would take a long time to evacuate the bag.
I second joe woodworker (http://www.joewoodworker.com/). He has a wealth of information on his website. Nice people to deal with.
this is his veneering section. http://www.joewoodworker.com/veneering/welcome.htm
