Hi all,
I’m building my first workbench. I’m using pine on account of the lower prise compared to hardwood. I have glued, jointed and planed the top (it’s made from 2 * 3 1/2” boards, and will be about 7′ long). Is it possible to add bulk to the top by laminating 1/2” to 3/4” hardwood boards to the top face and edges, or is this asking for trouble? It is going to be a split top.
Thanks

My bench top is made of four layers of 3/4" MDF with a top (replaceable) layer of tempered 1/4 hardboard. The top is, affordable, flat, STRONG, stable and heavy...and the hardboard can be replaced when it gets beat up some. The top is edged with 1-1/2" x 3" Douglas Fir. The plans for the bench came from Woodsmith.

Since you have your top built already, maybe you can add a layer of MDF and hardboard to it to get the qualities you are looking for.
