Hello
i hope this gets past the spam filter.
i need to sand down stucco like joint compound or plaster along our stairway. The prior owner must have liked the look. We hate it. Needles to say, this could kick up a lot of dust and we are very concerned about protecting our piano. This may provide an opportunity to get a new tool that might help sand the area down and control the dust. Can anyone recommend a tool and or brand that might help with the job? Would much appreciate any advice.
thanks

Drywall sanding
You might consider posting your question on the Fine Homebuilding site, where you're more likely to find construction folks.
Festool recently introduced their Planex LHS 225 drywall sander: http://www.sanderfordrywall.com/
Looks like it might be interesting. I'm not sure if any other manufacturers have anything similar.
Stucco
Sounds like an expensive tool you will only use once -
Plastic wrap the piano, fan in the window, and use wide putty knives to do the bulk of the work-

I used a device very similar to this one several years ago and really liked it. They have since added a water bath filter which will greatly reduce the stress on your shop-vac filter.
