I am a novice tackling my first hardwood project which will be a frame and panel roll top desk. My experience with finishes extents to standard stains and polyurethane, which I do not care for for this project. The problems I have read about finishing hardwoods have me concerned I may pick the wrong system. I have not yet selected the hardwood but, I am shying away from oak. Any advise for compatible wood and stain systems.

Hi Ron,
I'll take the easy way out and recommend a trip to the library or a good book store. Jeff Jewitt has an excellent book "Hand Applied Finishes", and Bob Flexner's "Understanding Wood Finishes" is also very good. Both authors explain the chemistry behind stains and finishes without getting overly technical. Everyone has a favorite staining and finishing method and if you ask 10 people you will probably get 10 different answers. Take a look at these references and ask some more specific questions. Personally I have just started using shellac and I like working with it. Good luck with your desk!!

*Hi BobThank you for your reply and advise on finishes. I will secure the references and I'm sure I will have more questions later. Thanks again.Ron T
