G-Day ALL,
I want to share with you all a opportunity that came to me the other day. Seems there is a older gentleman who is moving out of state and is selling his woodworking tools. What he has that is of interest to me is a 2 (two) year old sliding compound miter saw made by AEG, does this company ring clear to anyone out there. It is made in Germany and at first glance looks very well built. I know very little about this company, are they any good. He is asking $ 400.00 clams for this little baby and it includes a home made table and extension. the table may or may not be of any use to me, I would like to make my own. I have a Makita LS 1013 compound saw but it is mounted to a Delta mobil base and it really works sweet on the job, so it is out of my shop more than it is in it. I need a saw that I can bolt down and always know its there. So what about these AEG saws any input. Thanks Rick.

For a shop saw (provided you have the room), a radial arm saw would be my first choice. They have a much longer draw lenght and they are much more versatile. Granted they are not as easy to maintain or adjust for angles, but they are far more accurate and clean cutting than a portable when adjusted and calibrated correctly.
Thanks C.D.
I just recently sold my radial arm saw so I could buy a new Jointer. The R.S. was in storage for about 4 years and I never missed it. My OLD JET jointer on the other hand was getting tired, so it was time for a change. I would like a smaller miter saw for trim cuts and I can use my table saw for the larger one's. Thanks for the tips. Rick
Man, I just wish I had room for a jointer. And a few other machines as well. I guess Ill have to wait till I get a real shop instead of my garage LOL.
Sure, I rememger AEG. They were big in this part of the country (CT) in the 80s. Excellent product. I never saw their sliding mitre saw, however, perhaps you could post a pic? As long as it seems in reasonable condition, I wouldn't be afraid to buy it. You don't mention blade size. I think that the Hitachi and the Makita 10" double compound can be had at amazon for $450.00 or so. If the AEG is not a double compound, then I think that $300-$350 would be fair.
Good Luck!
John
Hi John,
Thank you for the info. This saw is a 10" ,not sure as to it being a double or not at this time.I went to this sale to look at a Powermatic 66 but they were off there nut on the price, the miter saw caught my eye as I was heading out the door. My gut was telling me 300.oo to 350.oo due largely to the price of new saws in Tool Crib. I will post a pic if this deal go's through. Rick

Sub guys can afford the best! Get the new one and you won't have to worry about if the oil was changed every 3000 miles.

Hi Sarge,
I know I know. A new one would be the ticket, but those German's put a heavy sticker in the window. This one was only used on Sunday after church by the guys Grandmother, who also did not curse or drink coffee. Now, that's a lot more than I can say about some of you wood junkies out there, Ha. I do have my eye on one of those Sliding 10" Porter-Cable numbers . The reviews at Amazon are real high. If they throw in Leather and a XM radio I could be tempted. As far as the honeymoon I am trying to break it up in bi-weekly sections this keeps it fun and Inga guessing. I will keep you posted on how this saw adventure turns out. I did Build 175 Feet of fence for my front yard this summer (not your normal fence) this is not breaktime but I could post some pic's if any one is interested. I was going to send them to F-G but my boy had the patch cord for the camera at school, it has returned. Be good Friend. Rick

It sound good. I picked up a Hitachi 10" slider about 8 months ago when Lowes was closing out for the new laser model. $239 and tax.
I was just ribbing you about having the money as I haven' t seen you in awhile. Try for $350 and see what happens. Won't hurt to suggest it. :>)
Good luck, sub-man....

Hi SARGE,
The Hitachi saws are real nice also, in fact there are a lot of real nice saws out there, this really complacates the final decison. It may even be another MAK1013. I will fire out a low figure and see if I get a bite.No worries about the ribbing, this is one of the reasons why I come here. It's no different the the verbal abuse I get from the BOY'S every day. I love it. What have YOU been working on as of late , any pic's to post. Has anyone posted more shop pics. I find these fun and educational, you get to see how everyone else keeps those wood demon's in line. They are running the show in my shop at this time. Have a good week. Rick

SARGE,
Now you tell me how can you put any thing on that work bench other than a glass top and the fancy eatin dishes???? Very nice Job. I love the extendable Turkey Pan holder also. Do you know how many hours you have in this piece, by the looks of it there is a bunch. Thank you for showing it off. Rick
Rick
The Turkey Pan Holder is good for mashing grapes and apples for wine and cider too. Just put a wash-tub under it and you're good to go.
Not counting glue-setting time, about 160 hours. About 12 hours on week-ends and 3 hours average a night for 6 weeks. It's made out of scraps and throw-aways. Had to buy about $70 worth of maple at the mill, $200 in vise hardware. So I got about $270 in her. Normally wouldn't take that long, but the scarps averaged 6" to 8" and I had to do a little jointing to make larger pieces. Go to the archives and look for "Work-Benchs-Beauty or Beast" if you wand details. That will give you an idea of how the experimental top is made.
Thanks for the compliments. BTW, I go about $30 in the top. Probably won't be too much sleep loss messing it up. It's an economy work-bench built to....... well..... work, and work hard. ha..ha..

Don't know about your particular tool but AEG is owned by Atlas Copco, a Stockholm, Sweden based company. The same folks that own Milwaukee. Some of Milwaukee's tools are AEG's dressed in Milwaukee red- the 6266 jigsaw is one example. One concern may be parts and service; it's worth checking into.
