After market spiltters / riving knives
I’m wondering whether or not anyone has come across an after market splitter and or riving knife kit for a General 220 M1 table saw? It currently takes a screw driver and an open end wrench to remove the splitter …………very annoying!
Many thanks…………JP

I have the same saw, and to date I haven't found anything the would work. I was thinking not to long ago about replacing the nuts with wing nuts. I havn't done it yet. I just have a wrench and a screwdriver that sits on the fence. Usually I'm switch from crosscutting to ripping when I'm taking the splitter off... So I just use it as an opportunity to switch blades.
Also I don't really know if you need the screw in the fron of the plate... My custome inserts don't have it.
Thanks for the response! Funny you should mention the inserts we purchase afterwards do not have the screw insert that the original had. Being a novice I went back to General on that one and they indicated it was not necessary? Then why in the original insert? Some time ago I came across a Web site of a fellow who manufactures guards, splitters etc for the after market and I cannot for the life of me remember his name or site. Someday when I'm not any longer concerned I'm sure it will pop up?thanks again...............Jim
There are lots of instructions out there on how to make a simple splitter from scrap metal. Riving knives require a different mechanism under the table.
I assume the screw is their to keep the inster in during shipping...
Good Point.thanks again for the info!Jim
Perhaps http://www.leestyron.com/sharkguard.php is the site of which you're thinking? The listing of saws for which they make the splitters includes the General 50-220.
Thanks for helping an old man. That is exactly who I was thinking of when I posted my message. Many thanks...............Jim
Second on that Shark Guard. They suck up the fine dust, protect from vertical and horizontal kickback and are very easy to remove. What's not to like? I think this is as close as you can get to the function of a true riving knife without changing saws.
I use one on my Shopfox cab saw. The splitter comes off in 2-3 seconds via a ratcheting lever.

Thanks David.....I'm on to Shark Guard!!Jim
I do not have a riving knife, but use the microjig splitter. Very easy to remove and put back. It is unique that it has set offsets so by reversing or using a different insert, you can apply pressure on the outfeed side to the stock against the fence or away. It is designed for a zero clearance insert, and easily fits under my overarm gaurd. I use it in combination with the gripp'r. Works well.

If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
Thanks Bones..........I'll look into this splitter!Jim
Another choice, and similar concept is the Anti-Kickback Spitter from Grip-Tite. $10.00 shipped and inserts into a zero clearance throat plate. Its easy to align and different sizes are provided for blade thickness. It doesn't interfere with the overarm blade guard. I wasn't sure when I purchased it, but had little investment. I have been thrilled with its simplicity and functionality.
