Age of old Marples Wooden Plane?
I’m looking for information about antique Marples wooden planes. Just bought one in an antique shop that is in pretty good shape. The Marples logo and “Warranted Cast Steel Sheffield England” appear on the iron and cap iron. There is no tote, just a very comfortable rounded back, with a horn pointing to the right as a right-hander uses it. It is about 10″ long by 3″ wide. I know Marples made wooden planes well into the 20th century, but the patina on this one tells me its pretty old.

Bob,
There are at least five different plane logos for William Marples and it's descendent firms. There are also three different logos for Joseph Marples also of Sheffield but not a related firm. With a little more information we might be able to get somewhere.
I'm not sure of this but I think European style horned planes didn't show up by British makers until late in the 19th Century. Most British horned planes I've seen are from the 1900's.
Larry,
Thanks so much for your help. My scanner isn't hooked up, so I can't send you the logo, but it is in the form of an oval. Inside the top of the oval, it says "W. Marples and Sons." At the bottom of the oval, there are the words "Sheffield" over the word "England." In the center, there appears to be a flower with three blossoms on three individual stems emanating from one plant.
Does this help?
Thanks again for your help.
Bob
