I’m looking for advice on how to get that gray, rough, aged “barn board”
look onto wood. If possible, I’d like to get both (1) the rough
weathered surface and (2) the gray color. The specific wood in question
at the moment is redwood.
The situation is that I have a large amount of solid redwood 2X6’s left
from a structurally unsound deck that had to be torn down and replaced.
I’d like to use the RW on other projects and in some cases would like
to keep the weathered look. The problem is that when I cut the RW,
I wind up with 3 (or 2) surfaces gray and weathered and 1 (or 2)
smooth red, new surfaces.
Is there a trick here?

A wee bit of time is all you need. It sounds flippant, maybe, but give it one year maximum and it will all blend in. Cut as you need and wait just a few months to see the effect of natural aging. Sliante.
*Sandblast it and spray it with oven cleaner. Really.
