A while back, one of the cyclone manufacturers (Oneida?) introduced a small cyclone that hooked up to a shop vacuum. The review in FWW was really positive. My question is: how has user experience borne this out? It looks like a reasonably priced unit, but is it as good as the report makes it?

Jeema,
What you are looking for is called the Dust Deputy by Oneida. I just bought one about 2 weeks ago (it may still be on sale for $149 with free shipping, regularly $199 on the web site).
My thoughts:
It works very, very well for sanding dust when attached to a sander. I don't think it would work as well for any other tool/machine that produces shavings or chips. It just wasn't designed for that. But for sanding dust, it does a great job.
I recently started using my sander hooked up to a ridgid shop vac to collect the dust. Previously, I was sanding outside to keep the accumulated dust out of my shop. The cold winter months made that uncomfortable. I sanded 50 raised panel doors and 31 drawer fronts on my last job and had to empty the ridgid vac 2 or 3 times and beat the filter against a tree to dislodge all of the dust.
I have been using the dust deputy for about 2 weeks and can't seem to find any dust in my shop vac. And a look inside the dust deputy shows the dust swirled around the base of the metal drum in a circular pattern, so I believe it is doing it's job as advertised.
One minor complaint: The outlet on the dust deputy to the vacuum is 2" OD, so I had to buy a hose adapter from them to enlarge it to 2 1/4" to be able to hook it up directly to my vac. I also bought a 10 foot hose from them with the right sized coupling on one end to attach to the dust deputy, and a 1" coupling on the other end to hook to the sander (that was about $30, if I remember).
All in all, I think it was well worth the cash to keep from looking like a powdered donut everytime I empty the shop vac. The dust deputy looks like it will hold a ton of dust before it needs emptying.
Good luck, and if you have any questions, drop me a line.
Lee
Thanks for your comments. After I posted, I went to google Oneida and yes, it's still on sale...I sent them a query about the sale duration, but no reply yet. I may go for it, but I'm in Canada-Vancouver area-, so shipping etc. may become a consideration. But YES, it sounds good!
