   The JDS I have (and their other models) uses the pleated house-filter as the pre-filter, and a bag filter for fine filtration.  Can be seen on this page.  No, they are not cheap, but neither is treatment for emphysema.  :-0

   Do you know the rough size of your filter?  And how thick is this bag filter.  It would be a coincidence if it would fit my application.  The opening size of this thing is 20x25.  I will have to build a thingy to house the secondary filter between the primary and the blower but will need the exact size.  As I mentioned earlier, this HVAC man had a 5 inch thick pleated one for thirty some dollars that. if it would do the same job as the bag type, of which you mentioned sounds a little more interesting than before.  But he had a two inch one for something like four or five dollars and it made the five inch one somewhat on the high side.  I suppose if they last better than a year, it wouldn't be too bad.

   Some folks on this forum belittle the health benefits of the air cleaner, what is your take?

   Just got home from the movies, will have to go out and measure tomorrow.  Note that there are  4 different JDS models.  There may also be independent bag-filter suppliers with other sizes.  You haven't noted any specs as to the minimum size particle these other filters would trap.  Is this guy providing you with info along such lines?

   I am strongly in favor of filtration units in a shop.  I try to capture as much dust as possible at the source, which is definitely the most effective approach, but in a small shop with limited funds (and time), the dust collecdtion isn't that great, and the air filter helps tremendously.  Having lived many years in smoggy Southern California, and lived for 18 years with a heavy smoker (mother), the odds are already stacked against me health-wise, don't need to add to it by inhaling dust particles I can't even see, but which will cause all kinds of problems down the road.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

   Well, I am rather naive about particle sizes extracted etc.  He did mention that one filter would not take out smokers smoke particles but he might have mentioned that the five inch pleated would extract those particles.  I'm not sure and will ask again.  What size extraction do we look for?

   Another thing I'm not sure of is volume.  It is a fairly large thing and has four speeds so am assuming it is large enough.  We used it in the house for some thirty years to blow the heat from above the stove in the kitchen into other rooms (partly effective.)  It made so much noise that we left it on the slowest speed.  With all the other shop noise, I could probably use any speed but I still don't know the volume it would put out.  The filter size is 25 in. by 20 in. and has a one third HP motor.  I do appreciate your info.

   Hi, Tinkerer, sorry I'm late -- spent the day in TV-upgrade-land, talking to the cable company,etc.  Mxs on the JDS filter for my scrbber are 23.25" x 11.25"

   IMHO, you need specs on the filters before you pick one.  I'm not getting a clear picture of what it is your using, except that it's more than just a squirrel cage -- which you could build a box for to suit a standard filter size.  Someone here at Knots might be able to sus-out the CMF for you given certain data (which he'd have to ask for -- perhaps diameter and depth of the squirrel cage, if that's the kind of blower it has?)

   Bill Pentz's site is a good one for dust collection info, and his comment regarding filters for dust collector's may apply to your air scrubbing activity as well:  "A little study showed that shops that must pass regular air quality inspections and filter their air almost all use 0.5-micron filters. My respiratory doctor says the medical recommendation is those with existing problems always wear a good NIOSH approved mask during dusty operations and use 0.2-micron filters."  Not sure how close you could come to .5, but at least you have a reference to compare to.

   I did dig up an old Knots link where Jackie Chan explains his shop-built air scrubber.  No pics or drawings unfortunately, but some very good information. about filters and design. 

   Googling Shop-made "air filter" wasn't very helpful, but I did fine this thread at ncwoodworker.net that shows the gist of a home-made one.  And Dominic's Workshop has plans for the one below (scroll down to just below "Tools" on this page <click>).  The link for the plan, in PDF format, is here.

   Dear FG,

   Don't apologize for being late, especially when it was only one hour forty minutes after my post.  I didn't get it quite then as I had gone to snoozy land.  Anyway I got a pleated $33 five inch filter and case.  It isn't quite as fine as yours.  The .3 micron filter was $85 and for a starter I thought I'd get this one.  The air handler is actually a squirrel cage mounted in this sheet metal case - sort of like a furnace with out the burners.  I can fasten the two filters on it with some wood bushing it out so think I am well on the way, thanks to you.  I will take some pictures and post when when I get it all mounted.
