HI,
I’m looking for a recommendation on an air filter for my one-man hobbiest shop. Size of the shop is about 19x22x9, so I figure I need about 500 CFM capability. I will hang it from the ceiling. Features that I think I would find nice are: HEPA, remote control, quiet, and maybe even a timer. So am looking for recommendations on brands that are found reliable, and generally have a good reputation.
Any help appreciated.

Do you already have a dust-collection system, Bill? If not, that's probably the place to start, since most of the filtration systems depend on having reasonably clean air with which to start. That is especially true with HEPA filtration, I'd think. Otherwise, the filtration system clogs pretty quickly with the "big chunks".
I don't have an air filter, so I can't make any useful recommendations. My neighbor uses a Fox filter, which seems to work reasonably well. But, it seems rather noisy to me.
clean air
No, i do not have a dust collection system, yet. But it is on my list. I took a dust collection class at my local Woodcraft store last week, so I feel I know enough to size a system. But I need to work through that in additional detail. Will probably put up a separate post on that.
Right now I have a Festool vac to suck the dust from my hand sanders, and have another shop vac hooked up to my router. (The Festool is probably one of the best investments I ever made). But I was cutting MDF on my table saw yesterday and it really threw some dust out.
But I feel that an air filter is for right now the path of least resistance for a somewhat cleaner shop
Fes-ing up
I "heart" my Festool vac, too, for use with my TS-55 and sanders. They are well-designed and work together nicely.
Although I don't have a DC system, it seems to me that the big advantage to DC systems is the much higher volume of air movement they provide, compared to a shop vac. The disadvantage is that they are big, noisy, and eat both space and lots of amps.
I have the Rockler DustRight hanging in my shop and love it. They are all a little loud at high speed, but the trade off is a much cleaner shop environment. I have full dust collection including shop vac attachments on my sanders. I have to clean the outer filter about once a week, it picks up that much errant dust. Since my wife insists on parking in the garage, I have to keep the dust to a minimum. Very little dust hits her car.
Air filter
Did some research and narrowed it down to the dust right and operatic pm1200. Power attic is more $$ but specs show it quieter. Need to think on it a little more
I had a Jet for a short time and then got the DustRight. Neither seemed too loud to me, but I haven't been around any other brands.
I'm in the process of making myself one with a dryer fan as the heart of the system. I have a box near the floor with a furnace filter top, piping outside to a dryer fan, and piping back up to the ceiling coming in. Pretty quiet and with my wood stove I get good air cirrculation in the winter. I don't know the cfm of a dryer fan but it moves a lot of air.
Air filter
Sounds like a plan. I have a wood stove too. I figure to also use the air filter to help circulate the heat. Then I can get rid of the 24" box fan I have now
