My Senco, 12-V pinner can’t drive a pin through 3/4 white maple. It does okay in most other hardwoods, but maple is too hard for it. Can anyone who owns an 18-V Dewalt tell me if it’ll pin maple? The stores won’t let me try the gun before buying it. How about an airless finish nailer, either Dewalt or Paslode? Is the Paslode a durable gun?

Gary,
You can't beat the Paslode guns. I have trimmed out whole houses with the 16 ga. nailer. I would not hesitate to buy a pinner from them. They are very durable, although they do need to be cleaned (which is not a big deal).
Cheers

The April 2005 Wood mag had a review of 18 g brad nailers. According to their tests, the DeWalt and Porter-Cable were distinctly better than the rest (which included Senco and Paslode) at driving efficiency. They tested that by putting 2" brads into oak, and decreasing the pressure until they did not all go in. While the tests to rate used oak, they mention that the Dewalt and P-C can drive 2" brads into hard maple even at pressures 30 PSI below their maximum, while others left some brads proud even at their maximum pressure.
Sorry, these are obviously not airless. I should read the question more carefully.

Thanks, Alan. Yes, I have a fair collection of pneumatic nail and staple guns. They're all Senco, and I don't have a problem driving nails in any wood species. I'm looking for airless for those times I need to do small nailing or pinning jobs during cabinet installation. I don't want to lug around my compressor - I'm getting too old for that.Gary W

What's needed is something a lot lighter and more powerful than a battery, like a gas engine.

Maple is like a wife.. Ya get through sometimes and not sometimes!
my dewalt 18v nailer has countersunk up to 1 3/4" nails into hard maple consistently but wont drive anything longer home. if that's enough for you, i say give it a shot.
