My wife is allergic to tree nuts (i.e. walnuts) Does anyone know can a piece of furniture made from walnut cause an allergic reaction?

No idea, but you make me curious. Is she allergic to tung oil finishes (extracted from tree nuts of some sort.)?
Typically no, the substances in the nut that cause the allergic reaction are not present in the wood. Walnut wood does contain other chemicals that can cause problems for some woodworkers though, so you still need to be careful and have good dust control.

I am pretty sure, based on personal experience, that you can also use walnut shavings to kill your kid's pet hamsters. Just put them in the cage like regular shavings.

I remember reading somewhere that they are hard on horses too.------------------------------------
The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools. -- Herbert Spencer (1891)
And I have learned from experience (much to the chagrin of my wife) they will definitely kill plants in your garden. Don't use walnut shavings for mulch!

Oh, I know that. I give all of my chip to people for garden mulch. But not the walnut.
