Alternate Sources for Delta 46-715 Lathe Parts
I had the reeves pulley on my Delta 46-715 lathe crumble apart on me four months ago. Since that time I have been trying to get a replacement part from a couple of different Delta parts manufacturers. I finally received word that this part has been discontinued. This is not surprising since I have heard that this is a very common problem with the 46-715 type 2 lathe. I am wondering if anyone has found a suitable replacement for this part perhaps from a different tool manufacturer?
The part number is 909945, this split pulley goes on a 16 mm motor shaft, and the outside diameter of the pulley is approximately 115 mm. The pulley is fastened to the shaft with a straight keyway.
I would appreciate hearing if anyone else has been able to find this part?

Delta Lathe Parts
I represent the New Delta and just wanted to let you know we are aware of these parts issues and are working hard to find new sources to make parts for Delta machinery and equipment including this Lathe. Unfortunately when S-B&D decided to sell Delta many manufacturers stopped making parts. We are finding new, better sources for these parts. It may take a while but we are working to fix this. Thanks.
The New Delta
Paul, it's good to know that Delta is working on improved parts availability. And, it's nice to see that the company is making an effort to monitor popular woodworking Web sites. If the "new" company also inherited the archives of owner's manuals, is there also an effort to improve online availability?
As an aside, my father managed an old-school hardware store that had its beginnings in the 1880s. When I worked there in the late '50s to early '60s, we were a "full-line" Delta dealer, which, at that time, meant we had at least one of each of the machines that Delta made in stock. Back then, that was a "bunch" of machines. Thus, I'm hopeful that the new ownership will allow Delta to regain its historical standing in the market.
Parts
I am happy to see that Delta is working on this issue. If I may offer some assistance to your company with this effort. There are many machine shops that I am sure would be willing to make these parts for you at a high enough standard to further entrust people to buy your brand. Their primary location is due east of your current manufacturing location in a place called The United States of America.

You should have replied to PaulDelta's post, rather than mine. But I appreciate the humor.
Delta Lathe Pulleys
If you need the drive-motor pulley, soon enough you will need the head-stock pulley as well.
I jerryrigged a multi-stage pulley onto the drive motor and changed gears manually. While far less than satisfactory, that worked for a while.
Now my main pulley has broken and guess what... those are also hard to find!
My lathe would make a nice boat anchor!

46-715 lathe
Hi. Per your post, you are working on getting replacement parts. Any sources available for the larger pulley set?
Did you try going through Baldor-Dodge, the current manufacturer of the Reeves pulley? They have reubuild kits for many of the Reeves pulleys.
There are quite a few Reeves pulleys on E-bay. Also, there is a variable speed pulley assembly on E-bay from a Delta metal lathe that might work.
Might also try checking out the Jet lathes, to see if their Reeves drive could be adapated.
Are you sure the shaft is 16-mm (0.6299-inches), and not 5/8-inch (0.625-inches)?
Thanks for the suggestions.
Yes, it is a 16 mm shaft, checked it several times with digital calipers.
Came close to something I could use on ebay, got lost in the huge Baldor-Dodge web site. I am going to contact Jet and see if their Reeves pulley will work. I gotta do something, I haven't turned a thing in four months, I'm starting to go into withdrawal.
Delta 46-715 Lathe Parts
Apparently this is a recurring problem with this pulley--it breaks into pieces at higher speeds and replacement pulleys are like hens' teeth. There's not an after-market website that I have not tried for a replacement or substitute pulley, all with the same answer. The number one search result for Google is e-replacement parts and speaking to their representative by phone I learned that they have been out of that part for some time and that it is a frequently replaced part.
My own solution might be to substitute a multi-step pulley system which may need to be "shifted" manually rather than on-the-fly as with the reeves pulley.
If anyone has come upon a home solution, I would appreciate knowing about it. For now I'm a little disappointed in Delta whom I had trusted for many years as a reliable manufacturer of quality machine parts.
Pully
I have a freind whom has a Grizly lathe that looks very similar to the Delta. he sent me pictures of the head stock and the interior looks identical. I contacted Grizley tech suport and though they only support their brand, he commented my feelings they may have been made in the same factory are probally be corect. Anyway $54 later I have on on its way to my house. Hopfully will be here by Friday and I will be able to post a part number to order. Will keep you informed.
Making lathe shavings again
I would be interesed to hear if the Grizley part works.
After nearly 5 months, I am finally making piles of wood shavings on my Delta lathe.
I ordered the reves pulley for the Jet 1442 lathe, and was able to get it to work on my Delta 46-715 lathe. The part number is JWL1442-159. At first the pulley would not quite fit on the motor shaft. I took a wooden dowel rod and wrapped a 320 grit sand paper around the dowel and slightly bored out the hole on the pulley to get it to fit. Also, I sanded down the burr on the motor shaft that the set screws made.
The only issue that I noticed was that the pulley is a little smaller than the Delta part, so I lost the two top speeds on the lathe. Since the pulley is smaller, the belt goes all the way to the top an comes off the pulley when the speed handle is cranked up to the two fastest speeds.
Today I loaded up an 11" diameter spalted maple chuck, about 6" thick, and the lathe handled it with the Jet part, no problem.
Hope this helps someone else with a similar problem.
Grizzly replacement
Any news on your grizzly replacement part? I am in the same boat. Pulley disentigrated last night........ Hoping you have good news for the rest of us on how this worked. Thanks in advance for the update.
I found one of these lathes on craigslist woman said it was her fathers and he bough it and never used it and that looked to be true, i plugged it in and ran the motor, at lower speeds it had a rattle in the drive and after a min or two of running had a ligh burning smell of rubber, is this the problem you are talking about is this lathe worth buying she wants 300 and the drive spur and tail center is missing as well as the spindle wrench and knock out tool
Pullet
Took a chance and dropped the $45.00 on a pulley from Grizzly for their lathe, part #4048211. Should arrive tomorrow. Sent an email to Delta asking for timeline on replacement part of alternate fix, all I got was "sorry" but they did end it with "Thanks for being a Delta customer"! If anyone from Delta is listening......it should be former Delta Customer. I'll keep you guys in the loop on the grizzly part. As a back up, Lovejoy makes a variable speed pulley (model 5010A) with a 5/8 bore that may work also. Thought I would go with the cheaper first and try it before dropping $180.00 for the lovejoy. Keep your fingers crossed for me guys.
Forgot to mention other source
Sorry for the heading on the last post...I'll proofread a little better on this one. I forgot to mention, if you need the pulley kit for the headstock, check out M & D Mower and Appliance. Spam filter wouldn't let me post the website link. They have the best prices available for the 24mm shaft pulley kit. If you have had the melt down on the motor pulley, it would be a good idea to check the headstock pulley as they are notorious about developing root cracks at the outer edges of the pulley where they intermesh.
Grizzly replacement works!!
Got the replacement pulley Grizzly offers for their lathe. It worked like a dream. It does get a little close of jumping off at the highest speed, so I would recommend not going up to the highest speed setting. The part number for the pulley is PO462009. Hope this helps the rest of you out that are looking for a fix.
which pulley is which?
I got a little confused. Was the grizzly replacement pulley you purchased that worked for the motor pulley or the head stock. I need the motor pulley replacement part # 909945 and would like to get a replacement pulley which I won't have to do to many mods to get it to fit. So is the PO462009 for the motor pulley? Thanks, Doc
pulley for turning lathe
I too had a pulley shatter. After exhausting all the Delta sites, I found a replacement pulley. It is manufactured by Lovejoy. The part is a Econoline 4007. It went on hard since the motor shaft seemed a bit over=sized. I mounted it with the spring away from the motor. I just got it installed, but must say it is much quieter than the old pulley which had become warped. The cost of the pulley was #136.00 pluis tax and shipping, but since my lathe was useless without it, I felt it was worthwhile.

Lennelson,
How is the Lovejoy Pulley holding up on hte Delta? are you able to get all the speeds? Is it quieter and less vibration free then the original pulley?

Lubricating the pulley wheels?
Hello All,
I know this is an old post, so I will not be dissapointed if it is not being monitored anymore. But I thought I'd give it a try anyway, and hopefully someone might be able to help me with my question---
My reason for posting is to inquire as to whether the pullies require any type of lubrication, and if so what should be used?
Like many of the people that posted here, I had some of the pulley wheels on my Delta 46-715 go bad. Luckily my pullies were the ones on the motor shaft that are a little easier to get. Even though they were listed as available, it still took a whlie and unfortunately not without a lot of badgering to get Delta to finally ship them. But when Delta kept breaking their promises on when they were going to ship them, I finally gave up and had a set shipped overnight from Grizzly. Dispite a phone call that very same morning with Delta confirming that they sill hadn't shipped, the arrived at the door as soon as I hung up the phone! Then an hour later, the pullies from Grizzly arrived. Now I have TWO extra sets of motor pulley wheels.
When I disassembled the wheels on the motor shaft, I found that the shaft was dry, and it appeared to me that the pulley wheels became worn mearly due to lack of lubrication. The wheels didn't explode as some say happened with theirs, the shaft holes became out of round from not being able to move freely. I found the lack of lubrication very suprising seeing that there isn't even a HINT in the owners manual about the lathe requiring ANY type of lubrication, or even any type of perodic revew of the gear assembly. I pride myself on being very vigilant on the maintenace on my tools, so I fully fault Delta and their lack of information for the cause of this breakdown.
After being down for nearly three weeks, I finally got the lathe up and running again. But being concerned with the lack of lubrication on the old parts, I applied some anti-seize to the motor shaft when I reassembled the new wheels. I also installed a new belt. But after using the lathe for about a week or so, the lubricant didn't seem to last (and their wasn't any indication that it had just flung off-- it just seemed dry again), so this time I tried applying a thin coating of synthetic grease to the shaft and grooves. But now after a month or so of running, the shaft seems to be dry again.
Additionally, the gear setup (pulley wheels and belt) seem to be making an excessive amount of noise dispite the lubricaiton, and everything seems to be tight upon inspection. When I check with the lathe running everything moves properly and nothing appears loose (including the upper pulley wheels and the main shaft). So I don't understand the reason for the excessive noise. But afer the failure of the original pulley wheels, I don't know if I'm just being parinoid now, or there is still an issue with something.
Any information would be greatful, especially any recomendation on the lubrication-- on the type to use and schedule.
I've had the lathe for nine years and I love it for it's veratility. I hadn't use it regulary the first 5 years or so I had it when I was just getting into turning, but I've been using it at least 30 or more hours a week now for the past four years (I use it for making custom fountain pens).
Thanks in advance for you're help.
Cordially...John

What to lube
The pulley and the shaft area to which it is attached should not be lubricated. The pulley should slip onto the shaft without any lubrication, often with a small square or Woodruff key in place. Once the pulley is aligned with the belt path, the set screw should be tightened. If the alignment is off, wear on the pulley is likely to result over time.
Only the bearings themselves require internal lubrication. Many bearings for these types of machines are sealed, however, to eliminate the intrusion of foreign matter. Thus, no maintenance may be required. At least not until the bearing needs to be replaced. If there is any play in the shaft, it's time to replace the bearing.
Delta 46-715
After suffering for many months, I found a solution to the reeves pully problem for my lathe. Order a JWL1442-161 spindal pull assembly ($59 plus shipping) from JPW Industries (JET), Tech services 1-800-274-6846View Image1-800-274-6846
The new pully diameter is slightly smaller, but it works fine, I still have variable speed. I had to have the pully mounting diameter machined about .004 to mount on the existing spindal shaft, and it worked perfectly for me. I was also able to order the motor side reeves pully and belt with no problem. Let me know if you need help.
Pass it on!

Delta 46-715 Reeves
My 46-715 is a type 3 with a 22mm spindle. I ordered the Grizzly part P0462021. It is the wrong part. It is for a much larger spindle. Does anyone know what size spindle the Jet reeves pulley is for?

Have you had any success sourcing the spindle pulley for this lathe?
How has the Pulley held up since you installed it?

Did the substitute Grizzly pulley work and continue to work?
Thanks.
