Amazing – About to Buy a Craftsman Saw!
Hi All,
Well, now that I have my job-site table saw taken care of with the Ridgid TS2400, I turned my attention to a saw for the shop. After lots of consideration and reading reviews and customer feedback, my decision is between two Craftsman models: #22124 or #22114.
After discounts, plus tax and a mobile base, the prices are as follows:
#22124 is $870
#22114 is $630
Until recently, I would not even look at a Craftsman table saw, never mind buy one. But I did look at these saws today, and I’m impressed. I was comparing them to the DeWalt and Jet hybrids.
I still need to decide which of the two models to go with.
Before I pronounce this saw part of my shop, does anyone here today wish to protest?

If you go for Craftsman, I'd certainly encourage you to go with the 22124 (larger motor). This new saw from Sears has made a big splash, we need a few people to buy 'em so we can do long-terms studies!

22124 has my vote and my money since November last year. Got a couple of k bf across it so far and NO problems to report. The blade they give ya with it is even a decent one. I wouldn't say as good as WWII, but as good or better for any one out there for less...
The 22114, too plastic-ey, didn't like the fence. That Bessie is SWEET..
Putzger has one too.

as always I wish you enough

The 22124 is on sale for $850 until 3/26. Sunday, 3/13 is a "Friends and Family" sale from 6-9pm for an additional 10% off. ....How's $773 sound?...
And show your Craftsman Club card for 10% more off! Have them deliver it...they'll put it the shop floor for you. Oh, and the 22124 (Sears GTS) is a different saw than the other two. Those two ARE 'Craftsman' class.

Joe,
Like I wrote above, the cashiers in my local Sears could not find the Craftsman Club membership forms. So I have to call a 1-800 number, which I'll do today...well, maybe right now!
you can also go to craftsman.com, there is a link there.
steelheader,
The craftsman.com Web site just tells you to call the 1-800 number or talk to a cahsier.I called the 1-800 number and they told me it is six to eight weeks before the membership goes into effect! In other words, if I want the 10% discount on the saw, I have to wait six to eight weeks!
If you know someone else with a membership use theres, I let others use mine all the time and they have never cared. When I got mine a couple years ago I thought I did it on the website, maybe I just got the number from there, sorry about that.
steelheader,
OK, who has a Craftsman Club membership number I can use? There is a forum on the Craftsman Web site, but you can only post messages there if you are a Craftsman Club member, which, as I stated, takes six to eight weeks! So I can't really post a message about what to do about how long it takes to get a Craftsman Club membership...I sent an e-mail to Craftsman's customer service department asking about this policy, saying that I'm ready to buy a new table saw and cannot wait six to eight weeks. I got a short e-mail back from them saying that I should check the Craftsman Web site for discounts and specials. This doesn't make a lot of sense, and they didn't seem to even read my message. Is Craftsman trying to lose my business before they even earn it? The way they are going, it won't take six to eight weeks for that to happen!
I didn't know about this sale! I was in Sears yesterday and didn't see anything about it.I also asked for an application for the Craftsman Club, but the cashiers couldn't find the applications. There's a 1-800 number to call. I think I'll use it!Thanks for the lead!
sliversRus,
Do you know if the "Friends and Families" sale is only for Craftsman Club members? I just found out today that it takes six to eight weeks for membership to be approved, which means any Craftsman Club discounts will have to wait six to eight weeks, which means I would have to wait six to eight weeks to buy a saw. Somehow, this seems weird.
sliversRus,
OK, Craftsman came through for me. I got access to a Craftsman Club number, and purchased the #22124 online. But listen to this...The original price of the saw was $949. It's on sale for $849.With the Craftsman Club number, the price dropped another 10%, to $764.I also have a 10% discount coupon, and I just found out that I can apply the Friends and Family 10% discount. That's another 20% off. I don't know whether this is figured from the $849 or the $764 (the difference is $26).To make a long story short, the final price of this saw is between $594 and $620.I think this is pretty amazing when you consider it's about $300 just to buy a Biesemeyer fence.
My best friend is planning on picking one up today at the F&F sale. Hopefully he'll get a great deal. We're planning to go together. I've printed stories from forums about others getting deals....just in case!
Matt...did you buy in New Hampshire...save another 6%.
BG,
No, I bought in Massachusetts. I'm going to pick up the saw today.Another 6% off?! It's tempting, since NH is only about a 1.5-hour drive, but I've already finalized the order here. I can't complain, with 40% off, and maybe I'll find some other way to deduct once I'm there!
Well, my buddy got his 22124 for about $688....$850 sale price minus 10% friends and family, minus 10% internet e-mail coupon. He added the 2 yr in home warranty for $40 minus a $15 coupon, minus 10% F&F discount. After sales tax and a $75 gift card from yours truly, he spent $690 out of pocket.
He's pretty happy, and I'm happy for him.
I got about the same deal. $850 on sale, 10% friends and family, 10% off coupon, $15 off coupon, $5 off coupon. Added the 2 year service protection agreement. Paid $702. No sales tax here in Oregon.

WOW !!!
But you're only "happy"?
I'd be outright THRILLED if I could have saved another $40 !!!!-- Steve

The good just got better. As I had said in my post above I got the price of my 22124 down to $702, this included the $40 for the 2 year service agreement. This weekend I got an automated call saying my order was in and ready for pickup, I was suprised but happy because It wasnt supposed to be here until Wednesday. Of course when I got there to pick it up it wasnt there yet, just having problems with there new automated system. To make up for my trouble ( 5 minute drive, 10 minutes there) they gave me another 10% off the saw. Making the total price with service plan $632, WOW.
"Wow" is right.
Just beween your experiences and mine (with department mgrs coming to my home) it sure looks as if Sears is going a long way out of the way to get these 22124 saws ino good hands and erase the long & sad/bad rep (along with the two blackened eye) they gave themselves a few years ago.
BTW: Congrats!!!!!

Matthew-
A word of caution about Craftsman saws- make sure they will accept aftermarket accessories. I''m not familiar with the ones listed, but have found out the hard way in the past.
Check the miter slot to make sure it is standard, also check the insert, if it takes a standard style.
Matthew - I'm not sure about whether or not the F&F sale is restricted to CC members, but I can't imagine a manager denying you the opportunity ....just tell him you've applied (you have right?). Go in Saturday or Sunday and ask a tool manager what you can do...Craig - The new Craftsman saws are made by Orion International and has ties to Delta engineering. Notice how similar the 22124 is to the new Delta hybrid (36-717?). The miter slots are standard, the fence is a commercial Biesemeyer, and the throat plate opening accepts Delta inserts. It also somes with a very good 40T Leitz blade, a collapsable outfeed table, an extension table, a crosscut fence and clamp on the miter gauge, has cabinet mounted trunnions, a full cabinet, serpentine belt drive, and weighs in @ 425#. It's absolutely nothing like the Ryobi made junkola they've been selling for the past several years. The 22104 and 22114 don't offer the impressive lineup of accessories as the 22124, but they represent solid values IMHO at sale prices.
sliversRus,
Yes, I have put in an application. I'll go in on Saturday or Sunday and see where I get with the tool guy/gal.I've been exchanging messages with the Craftsman Customer Service Department this afternoon. The responses are getting more cryptic as we go along. In the last one, the customer-service rep said he agreed that it is frustrating to wait so long for membership approval, and wrote this:"My only suggestion is to call them and ask them to assign you a number immediately."Umm, who is the "them" referred to here? Customer Service? But this e-mail is coming from...Customer Service!Ahh, corporate America.
The salesperson I bought my saw from last fall TOOK CARE of all the paperwork to get all my discounts, even though I had just called the 800 # the day before. NO problems! She was very happy to sell me the saw, being she was working on commissiom. Think of it being like purchasing a new car. Most people don't pay the price on the window. Besides that, the money you save can buy you some new accessories that you can't live without for that new Craftsman saw, which, btw ain't your Grandfathers saw, but it's also not the saw of a couple years ago. I like mine! Dick
I paid $870 for my 22124 -- that price *included* sales tax, delivery and a 2-year service agreement. That was early last Ocober.
Since then, I like the saw more and more every time I use it (which is just about every day). Do a search on either 22124 or my user name to find other postings about the saw :-)

hows the mobile base working out for the saw?

oak,
I don't have the saw yet -- still waiting for the order to be confirmed from Sears. I thought it would be ready last weekend, but it wasn't. Actually, I don't know which mobile base I'll get.More information to follow...
I bought the Sears (HTC) when I got the saw. It's just OK; 2 levers instead of 1 big foot pedal. I only use it to vac under or find the occasional nut, etc. But if I had given it more thought, I would have bought the Delta single pedal or something similiar.
hey matt...
hows that mobile base treating you?
oak
oak,
I should have finished this discussion before, but here goes...When I went to Sears to pick up the saw, they said it wasn't ready, even though I had an e-mail confirming the order was ready. When I went back again, something was wrong with the way they were applying the discounts (I don't rememeber the details) and I had to wait for a manager to clear it up. They asked me to come back the next day. When I got home that day, I had an e-mail from Sears telling me that my order was cancelled, which a call to Sears seemed to confirm was a mistake. Anyway, to make a long story short, I was at a very busy point in my life, with a couple of big projects I needed to complete, and I did not have the time or patience to deal with this. I let it go for a while, the discounts no longer applied, and I just never got back there. Maybe I'll try again at some point, I don't know. The saw was a nice idea, for the price, but I can't say that I was desperate to get one.
