I have some beautiful amboyna burl veneer that I am using for a table. Any suggestions as to finishes. I have never used this species before and didn’t know if it presented any special difficulties or quirks.

i have used amboyna for some jewelry box tops and end table tops - attached one of the jewelry box tops. i found that there are sometimes some voids that need to be filled - using epoxy tinted with dry paint pigments. also it can get pretty brittle making edging a little difficult. other than that it finishes beautifully with incredible depth.

beautiful piece!!! Thanks for the heads up on the pores and brittle nature. I plan on running a couple of smaller sample boards and I will try the paint pigment pore filler if there are larger voids. I'll let you know if there are any real problems.

I haven't used the burl, but I have used the wood. The pores are large. I think that you will want a pore filler. I was not pleased with my result. Maybe you know better how to fill pores without altering the beauty of the wood. LOL!!

PS: I forgot to mention that it seems to sand away very rapidly & somewhat unevenly. Maybe you don't sand. More LOL!!
