American table saw to use in Europe
Hi.
I am looking to purchase an American style table saw Powermatic, Laguna, Sawstop etc and ship it to Ireland, I dont particularly like the European saws.
The only problem is that our power supply is 220V 50 Hz, or 110V 50Hz. I believe all American machines are 230V 60 Hz or 115V 60Hz.
Would anyone have any recomendations or are there any European forum members who might use an American style saw in their shop, and what did they do to convert the power supply.
Regard’s.

Vince,
You should not have any problem running a machine designed for 60Hz power in a 50 Hz environment. The only difference will be that a 60Hz machine will run slightly slower by the ratio of 5/6 and generate 5/6 the power.
However, if you are buying a saw new, you may be able to get it equipped with a 50 Hz motor.
The voltage difference is not important. The range is 220-240 and is nominal. The saw will come supplied with the power cord ready for you to attach whatever style of connector Ireland uses for 220-240 equipment or just wire it into a switch/curcuit breaker box.

Hi Rich
Thanks for that.
Since I put up my post I was on the Sawstop website and I see they have a 50Hz motor option.

Axminster Power Tools now sell an American style 10" tablesaw , that is made by the same Chinese company (Harvey) that makes the Grizzly 3hp cabinet saws. I bought one here in England about 3 months ago and find it to be very well made.

Hi Peter
Thanks
I was looking at the Axminster site last week and I looked at that saw looks pretty good but I’m not gone on the Chinese connection.
I know Axminster do some Powermatic machines but not the table saws, possibly because of the EU ban on dado blades

Hi, Peter they are delivering in all Europe?
Hi Vince,
Rich is right. I've used a Rigid 3650 here in Germany for over 10 years. The motor is only 1 1/2 horsepower but I don't think the hp of the motor will matter. I wired it for the 220/240 option and use a plug adapter. I use step down transformers for machines that will only work on the 110/115 voltage. If you are returning to the U.S. in the future, you should be able to use a 60 Hz U.S. motor in Ireland while you are there.

Hi Michael.
Appreciate your post.
Maybe I'm being over cautious, I imported a DeWalt DW 744 saw from the US about 8 years ago, that machine is 120V 60Hz and seems to be still working fine.
Stepping up to a Sawstop or Powermatic is a big outlay for me and I just want to be sure it's going to work at 100%.

Hi, Vince,
I want to purchase a Sawstop contractor saw, but I don't find a European dealer on the Sawstop Internet site. How do you get one of their saws shipped to Ireland? I live in Israel. Perhaps I can use the same method.
Thanks,
Michael
Hi Vince. A search for "Sawstop europe" brought me to this thread. I realize it is a bit old and maybe this note will not even reach you. Perhaps you've already made the purchase. If so, I place my comments here for posterity. :)
I am an American woodworker in Paris and had the same wish — to purchase an American style cabinet saw here. I finally settled on a Laguna Fusion3 which I purchased from a retailer in the Netherlands > http://baptist.nl. There is also a place in Czechia which has some relationship with the store in the Netherlands as their branding has been on the crate of other machines I've purchased > http://igmtools.com.
The reason I was looking into Sawstop again is that on YouTube I was watching a video by an artisan who I presume is in Köln — a guess based only on her logo. I caught a glimpse of the Sawstop branding at the 5:08 mark in this video > https://youtu.be/TPVq0zXKy3c.
If you've found a saw I hope it is working well for you.
Cheers and best wishes for 2022!
