Nitrocellulose lacquer will work, will hold up well in use, and won't smell, but you need to give it a few weeks with the box open for the finish to fully cure and release its smelly stuff.
My favorite interior finish is de-waxed shellac, mixed in about a 1 to 2-lb. cut with denatured alcohol. (The formula for "cut" is one pound of shellac flakes to a gallon of alcohol equals a 1-lb. cut.) Simply wipe on, sanding between coats, and put enough coats on until you have the sheen you desire. Shellac dries within an hour, and the box can put into service the same day.
Good luck finishing,
Andy Rae
Dear Andy,Thanks very much for the suggestions. I'll try one or both.John Norman
Andy is right in suggesting shellac- but if I may,the other finsih for boxes or drawer interiors is wax. two applications of pastewax (Goddards or Briwax is what I usually use)makes a very nice finish which is usually quite strong enough for the inside of a box or a drawer- no smell and no dry time.

Dear Bob,Thanks for the idea of using wax. I'll consider it along with Andy's suggestion of shellac.John Norman
