I have a problem. A client brought in an 18″ piece of 3×3 Jatoba for a display. Its base was already cut at a 45 degree angle. My problem is I have to cut 1/2 x 1 slots (4) so that the bases are parallel to a display table and the items being displayed are perpendicular. Like cutting steps.
One more thing. The slots have to be centered with flat sides, leaving 3/4″ on each side.
My router doesn’t cut at a 45 so I’m at a loss. I tried drilling with a 1″ drill bit at a 45 and chiseling the rest without any luck.
I’ll appreciate any help.
Thank you,
Mikaol

Can you post a drawing illustrating what you have and what you need it to wind up at?
It's very difficult to follow your description. As Ben asked, can you post a drawing of what you are trying to achieve. I took a best guess from what I can glean out of your text. Is this even close?
As I understand it, you need to cut steps into what is effectively a 45 degree slope.
The obvious solution is to cut a matching piece of scrap at 45 degrees, then you have a square block and can machine that. Unfortunately one of your cuts will need to be almost 3 inches deep and I'd be leery of that on a router.
It should be possible on a table saw if you have one though. Use lots of blue tape to hold the pieces together. Do all four slots at the shallowest (top of display) depth first, then three at the second and so on. Neaten the bases with a chisel.
