Hi Folks,
I make 18th century reproductions in the W&M, Queen Anne and Chippendale styles. It seems that I am always experimenting with the aniline dye colors to find something I like. For maple I often use Lockwood Early American Maple Honeytone Amber. I seem to be doing most of my experimenting with colors for cherry and mahogany. Also, I am currently trying to find a good medium to dark brown for curly maple.
I am sure others must experiment as I do. Would anyone like to share their favorite colors and perhaps their techniques for using them?

Gary, I've had some good luck trying out the Moser water soluble dyes from Woodworker's Supply. I experimented with several on curly maple recently: cherry amber maple, russet amber maple, etc. I also tried mixing them 1:1 with an antique cherry red color which warms up the color, in my opinion. I personally like a topcoat of orange shellac on this to bring out the curl. In case you need it, WW' Supply is 800 645 9292. Hope this helps!
