The Taunton Press is preparing to launch FineWoodworkingNetwork.com, a subscription website that brings together material from Fine Woodworking’s 30 years of publishing, as well as many new interactive features, videos, and a major upgrade to the Knots community.
<!—-><!—-> <!—->
In response to the many requests we’ve had from Knots members over the years, we’ve increased the number of topic folders to cover a broader range of subjects. To accomplish this, Knots will become a collection of seven forums, rather than just one. Six of these forums will be open to registered members of Knots, just as it is now. The seventh forum will be available only to subscribers of FineWoodworkingNetwork.com. It will include expert forums hosted by professional woodworkers, contributing editors, and some of us here on staff.
<!—-> <!—->
What will be different?
When we launch, Knots users will see some changes, including a new URL. So if you have Knots bookmarked, be prepared to update that link. To get to the new Knots when it launches, visit www.FineWoodworkingNetwork.com, and click on the Community link in the top navigation. There you will see links to all the forums and folders available to you. All of our existing links to Knots, will also redirect you to the new location.
Knots will be put into read-only mode for approximately 12 hours in advance of launch. During this time, users will be able to read, but not post to discussions. Sysop will post on the forum before this takes place.
<!—-> <!—->
We’re very excited about this impending launch. Everyone here has been working around the clock to bring this new site into the world and we can’t wait to see you there.
<!—-> <!—->
Cheers,
The <!—-> <!—-><!—->Taunton<!—-> <!—-> Interactive Team

Just a follow-up note regarding this change. Your current registration will continue to give you access to knots as usual. As always please feel free to ask any question here and we will do our best to answer them.
Is there a target date for the launch?
So if I am understanding correctly, this will incorporate additional forums under the Knots heading, and Knots will continue to function as it does now?
Will we need to re-re-register?
Andy

You WILL NOT have to do anything different when the new Knots is live. Your current information will be preserved in full. The only difference is that you will have access to more discussion folders.Just like most woodworking projects, I hesitate to give an exact date. You never know how many coats of finish it will require, or how long they will take to dry... Matt Berger

Matt, I have probably 50 or so bookmarks that point to various Knots posts. Will have I any problems with these?

Hi Forestgirl,Thanks for asking this question. I'll get Sysop to weigh in on this today, but I might suggest you copy the thread number for each of those bookmarks. Knots will move to a new url so I'm guessing all the links will change. Again, Sysop might have a better solution to suggest.- Matt
How about that. I just gave away my alter ego. "Ringo" is my mighty fine pooch, and the screenname I use from home.Matt Berger

Thanks, Matt, I'll admit, it had me a bit confused! I'm eager to hear the answer. It'll be an afternoon's project to assign new properties to those bookmarks if that's what's needed.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
ForestGirl,
I just did some tests and the answer is that the bookmarks will not carry over to the new forums. The good news is that the old knots will be available for the foreseeable future in a read only form. Theres always the search function...
"Theres always the search function..." Yeah, but....lot's o' work went into those bookmarks. As long as the old Knots is around, virtually forever, they'll work I guess. What about the message number? Do those stay the same between the two boards?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Sysop has also explained in an earlier post that the existing forums will remain in a read-only mode for a while so you can also go back to them for reference.It looks like we're going to have a Monday launch so you're questions should soon be answered with the real thing.
Great stuff, I am along time subscirber since #17.
Do I remember right that you offered a CD of past articles form Fine Woodworking in a recent issue? can't find the info to order them.
Please e-mail responce
If you have information on that article CD, you might as well post it here... jigsawjohn isn't the only one interested. :)
We are no longer selling the CD archive for Fine Woodworking. All of that content and much more will be available through FineWoodworkingNetwork.com.
Here's some history on the CD product. It was launched a few years back and included about 500 articles from the Fine Woodworking archive and several dozen issues worth of Methods of Work articles. Every six months we added more archive articles to the website, and customers who purchased the CD were given 1 year access to the Online Archive.
Now we're up to almost 1,000 archive article online (and counting), and the CD really has become outdated, so we've migrated that content online into a very exciting new platform.
IMPORTANT: Customers who purchased token packs will be receiving an email at launch that explains how they can continue accessing the online archive.

You said in your post that the new service is subscription based. Not wanting to be rude, but I'd like to ask how much will this cost, and how will the fee be collected? I'm also curious if the same will be happening with Breaktime and the other forums in the future? Thanks.
Did you ever get an answer to probable pricing? I did not see one posted1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
Did I get an answer to my question? Nope, not a peep. I'm hoping it's because they don't have time, and not because it might open a can of worms that they don't want to deal with right now. The same applies to Saulgood's question about Breaktime. Thanks for asking.

While you all are excited about "bringing the new site into the world" I am still experiencing "birthing pains" from the last change. A number,including myself, lost their screen names with the change and now FG and others will lose their bookmarks. I hope the value of this change compared to the problems it will cause is seen as an overall benefit by the members of this forum. This is a great forum and I for one appreciate Tauntons sponsorship, however, if these changes become more burdensome than they are worth we will lose participation.
I agree with you about the significance of losing our screen names. I have expressed my dismay about this to the guys at Sysop. Hopefully, that will never happen again! :-(
I'm not too worried about the bookmarks, yet, LOL. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
Breaking News: The new system also has a new feature that allows Knots members to change their screenname.
So if you don't like the one you chose at the last upgrade, you'll have a chance to pick a new one.
So is the subscription to FineWoodworkingNetwork.com included with our magazine subscription or do we now have to pay for both the magazine and the online content? I would be thrilled if this was opened up to your loyal subscribers.
Alternatively, if we have to pay separately for both, what is the appeal of maintaining the magazine subscription if we get access to all those articles online? I realize that some people enjoy seeing the printed plans and pictures, but for those of us who are growing up in the internet generation, I see no use paying twice for the same material if its included in FineWoodworkingNetwork.com.
Given that you said the site will have access to prior articles, at some point I'm assuming online subscribers will have access to the majority of articles that are in the magazine. Depending on subscription price, are you guys worried about cannibalizing your magazine subscription base?
And what is the subscription price for the online site?
The reason one would prefer to either get both or just get the magazine is they can't take it away from you and try and sell it back to you.
Internet forums come and go and the ease with which people can do so makes them work. Don't believe me? Check out how many now post to the cafe as opposed to how many used to.
Taunton has come a long way from where they started but I am not sure the journey is in the right direction.
I've been offline for a little while, tell me; is this going to happen on "breaktime", or any of the other linked forums? I heard a rumor of this a while back...
