I rarely use Walnut and I am NOT a good finisher. I do well using oils though. My question is maybe, a bit strange, but what do you experts use on common grade walnut. I say common because it is not black walnut. I tried some of the oil’s I usually use and I thought I could do better. I tried some thinned-out walnut stain and I thought it looked nice. But then, I thought, why should I change the color of a beautiful wood? The grain still shows well but I wonder why I did it. I am not sure I expressed my thoughts very well. I tend to like wood as Mother Nature made it. Is it common for a finisher to stain (any) wood in a color that is basically the same color as what they started with? I think it looks better but not sure why? Hope this makes sense.

Natural colors are fine - it's a personal preference.
Oil brings out the natural color.
Staining evens out areas that might appear too light with just oil and no stain.
There is no right or wrong.
Sometimes stains are used to blend together and unify the overall color.
The oil provides protection - easy to use - no equipment needed.
