Another “What jointer to buy” question”
This weekend I will be purchasing my first jointer and I’m very excited (too excited perhaps). I have been watching the forums and, well, I still am not settled. I almost convinced myself on the Delta x5 jointer, but recent forum posts actually seem to lean towards grizzly for value. My budget is around $600 so no 12 inchers. As far as the Grizzly’s go, is the “Z series” the best or the “super heavy duty” ones. What about that Sunhill company, any reviews on them. There is a 8 inch jointer on clearance, but since Im just starting in WWing I’m thinking a 6 inch will be just fine. Edge jointing will be the major task but I do have some 8 foot, old oak boards so a long bed would be nice but it seems that in my price range 46inch is the norm.
Any info would be great… I apologize for repeating so many questions already asked, but I really want to get the best jointer for myself.
Thanks much everyone

Just me.. I would get a good 6 inch jointer an a 12/13 inck planner... Unless you already have a planner...
inck as in Inch!

I am guessing you're on a limited budget.
I bought the Canadian made General 8" jointer (hey I am a canuck). Fantastic machine, and lived with an old small 12 benchtop planer from Makita. A good jointer makes an enormous difference when gluing up panels. Spend more on the jointer if you have a limited budget. As an example the little planer I had would sometimes snipe badly because the infeed and outfeed tables were not tuned up and rather small in any case. So I would joint the face side, plane the back side and snipe would be hidden.
Maybe there is a way to work with a good planer and so-so jointer, but this was my experience. I eventually replaced the planer too.
Best regards,
Ted
jdclarey,
I wish they'd had spiral head jointers when I bought my Grizzly but I sure am happy with my Grizzly..
It's just the old tool envy.. I want a 24 inch spiral head jointer (hey, somes good, mores better, and too much is just plain fun!)
Wider is better! given a choice between an 8 inch plainer and a 6 inch with spiral head I'd still get my 8 incher..
