I need to make an icebox. All the hardware I have found for iceboxes has been polished brass. The client wants antique brass.
Is there anyway to antique polished brass? I don’t want a surface treatment, I want something that lasts.

From my days of metalsmithing we used Casey Birchwoods Brass Black available in most gun shops. Soak the parts in lacquer thinner to remove the coating and sand 220 wet and scotchbrite maroon pad to get a nice finish. Mix the Brass Black in with water maybe 6 oz to a gallon of water in a plastic tub or we used a pastic rain gutter for piano hinges. Dip the parts in the solution and let it soak a few minutes and rub evenly with a maroon pad. Repeat several times to get darker. Wear surgical gloves or you will get fingerprints. Dry with cloth towel and wax to finish or spray with a semigloss lacquer. Gloss is too plastic looking. Wax will still let the patina develop over time and darken some more. You can pour the brass black in a jug and save it for re-use. Pretty safe and non-toxic. You can get colors from golden to nice browns with practice.
