I made a picture frame out of some very old pine boards I found. The picture is an antique photo. I was just going to wax the frame, but I think it needs a bit more character. I don’t really want to change the color much, though.
I remember hearing that you can use hide glue in conjunction with paint for a crackled look. Is it possible to use hide glue to get this look with a clear varnish such as waterlox or poly? Can anyone tell me how (Brush a glue solution on first? After? Mix it?…)
Thanks

If you want a crackled clear finish you must use a waterbased varnish finish, poly will not work. Thin the hide glue and brush it on the wood. The direction of the brushing on of the glue will effect the direction of the cracking. The thinner the glue coat the finer the checking, a thick coat of glue will produce larger cracking. You must allow the hide glue to dry, up to four hours before applying the wb varnish. When you brush on the varnish go over the surface only once, if you brush it too much, you will mess up the finish. Practice on a piece of the wood before you try it on the money piece.
