My husband is celebrating a big birthday and wants a dust protected radio/cd player for his woodworking workshop. He says he saw one for about $50 but can’t remember where. Can anyone make some helpful suggestions on where to look and what unit is a good one?
Thanks.

diana,
How about headphones with built-in FM radio. Kills two birds with one stone, ear protection and music.
No dust issues either so maybe three birds!

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
Hi Diana ,
Seems like I've seen some that are called " job site radios " made by DeWalt . Looks kinda like what you call a boom box sort of thing .
Try checking in with a local tools store , there may even be more then one brand and type , really not sure about the dust proof feature , sure is a good idea though .
good luck dusty
DeWalt, Bosch and Milwaukee all make Job Site radios. I think they all go for around $100 and are found either at Home Depot or Lowes

I have a DeWalt. It makes a good battery charger, lousy radio. I also have a Bosch. It makes a great radio, CD player and MP3 player and has 4 GFCI outlets to boot. I assume the batter charger works well, but I don't have any Bosch cordless tools, so I haven't tried it out for that. Most of my cordless tools are DeWalt, but the Bosch is so good, the DeWalt radio is stashed somewhere (I don't even remember where) gathering dust!

I used to go through about two radios a year, but my Dewalt has lasted 2 years now.
However in the shop I prefer to use my MP3 player with earphones because I wear ear muffs half the time.
Pardon my spelling,
Mike
Make sure that your next project is beyond your skill and requires tools you don't have. You won't regret it.
I spend a lot of time out there lately so I moved our fancy clock radio to my shop. It sounds great!

They also have a single speaker one that isn't HD. The HD, especically if you have a number of stations that broadcast in it, is great.
It was demoted out of the bedroom when the boss needed to get up at different time than I do so she needed her own alarm.
I plug my IPOD in to it so there isn't the CD player dust issue.
I have the Bosch radio / charger thing but the reception is terrible. Fine for jobsite, but not for hours in the shop.
I like my Makita (get the white one) because if you do not your ipod will not work with it.Drew
Diana,
Go crazy. Get him a satellite radio receiver such as XM . You can go to a store like Best Buy or Circuit City and find out all about it. It will cost a little more than $50 dollars , but is well worth it. There are NO COMMERCIALS, every kind of music you like, and plenty of sports if he likes that. You will have to buy a subscription, but you get a reduced rate if you purchase it for a year at a time and, there are NO COMMERCIALS..
I built a simple wooden frame with a removable top and added a small glass front to mine. The glass front allows for a remote control to work anywhere in the shop. Remote controls are like clamps in a wood shop, a man cannot ever have too many.
I wrapped the wooden frame with black speaker cloth to keep the dust out, It also helps the unit to ventilate. The speaker cloth is available at any place that sells fabric.
He'll love it, and did I mention there are NO COMMERCIALS.
I agree, If he is not the MP3 type, a satalite radio is great.Pardon my spelling,
Mike

If you are seriously thinking about satellite radio, Sirius has a free 3 day trial via internet. You simply go to their site and follow the links to their online radio. That way you can see if you like it before buying.
I have Sirius, but not in the shop, just the car because we travel frequently in the mountains where normal reception is very poor. I also listen online with headphones because the computer is in the same room as the wife's TV and her afternoon shows.
In my shop I have just a cheapie old radio shack AM/FM that's on 24-7-52 weeks a year to entertain the mice and catch the news and weather occasionally. I found earphones out there interfere with dust masks, safety glasses and ear plugs.

I am on my second GE Super Radio 3. I love it! Cost? check the internet but should be around $50. It has excellent reception. AM/FM only. I lean towards talk radio. Two of the same kind in twenty years!
I have the Makita jobsite radio and previously had the Milwaukee. Both are tough having survived falls, rain, and dust and have good sound. Neither have CD players but the Makita BMR100W and Milwaukee have inputs for CD players, Ipod etc. The Milwaukee comes with a bag on the radio the will protect the player and also has weather bands on the radio. If your hubby sleeps in the shop ;), the Makita can be used as an alarm clock. You might to check and see what brand of cordless power tools your husband uses- Bosch, DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee all make jobsite radios which can use cordless batteries (they're brand specific) which I've found handy on the jobsite and at home when the power fails and they should all hold up well in a shop environment.
