Looks like a lock/latch. Grip the handle, pull the knob to unlatch a door or somesetch. Curved bit lets you push it closed again like a modern lockset.
It looks to me like the removable handle to an old clothing iron. They were nothing more than a chunk of cast iron that sat on a stove to get hot. Then the handle was attached to pick it up and use it while a second was placed on the stove to get hot. Notches were cast into the top of the iron to attach the handle to.
