I’ve got a few dogwood trees about 10-12 inches wide that have been killed by a blight going through the area and I am considering putting the wood to use if it’s worth the trouble. Anyone ever use dogwood? Is it stable? Machining characteristics? Color? <!—-><!—-><!—->

It's relatively hard and stable when dry. Machines well and I would guess it would work well with hand tools although I have never done so.Nice colour not a particularly nice grain. It was used to make shuttles for textile looms for many years in the south.

I bought a bunch of it about 25 years ago. The stuff I got was used to make shuttle blanks during WW2 for producing parachutes [from what the guy I got it from told me]. It doesn't seem to splinter and reminds me of boxwood as it turns great and finishes very well. The guy I got it from used it (and so did I) to make cutting boards. The figure is nothing to write home about, but it makes good strong tool handles.
Hope this helps...
IMSA,
In my opinion, their bark's are worse than their bites.
Garfield.(Also they tend to chase cars)

Lucky you. I've been looking for some for a while. Sapwood is pretty wide - not much brown heartwood. Wood is very heavy, hard and durable. I think its used for golf club head and other high wear uses. Hard to dry, hard on tools, and glues poorly. It also shrinks a lot on drying. Sounds pretty tempermental, doesn't it? Still I would like to have some, but sounds like a lot of work to get from tree stage. Maybe for turning?
<added> color of sapwood is pale pinkish brown, heartwood is dark brown

Stantheman, I have a few small tree sections left over if you need some. Nothing too big though. Let me know if you are interested and maybe we can work out a swap. It has been drying for years and has been stored under roof.
I am in Dallas, Texas but the dogwood originally came from Florida.
Just let me know.

What area are you in? I'm in northeast Alabama and have a number of these beauties on my property. Has the desease been identified?
