I am going to be in New Zealand for about 10 days next week. I will be traveling all around the south island. I was wondering if anyone is from there and if there are any interesting places to go. Meaning any galleries or wood working shops or things of that nature. Thanks for your input.

I am also interested since we will be there for several weeks in February.
Kaleo,
You might try Philip (Marcou) [http://www.marcouplanes.com/] and Malcolm (MacPherson) [http://www.macpherson.co.nz] (as you probably know, both frequent posters here on Knots). Not sure whether they are on the North or South Island, though.
Tschüß!

Pretty funny - we're heading to NZ on Christmas Eve - Santa will, supposedly, be meeting us somewhere over the Pacific, LOL.
Our daughter is in NZ for a bit on a fellowship, and we have some friends (Kiwis) also, but all are on the North Island.
I made the same trip 5 or so years ago. From what I remember in Christchurch there is an old university building converted to a collection of craft shops, some furniture but mostly fabrics. We stayed at a wonderful bed and breakfast, it was being remodled at the time and the folks were using a beautiful native wood for elaborate trim work. If you need accomodations let me know and I'll see if I can find the name of the place.
Not woodworking related, Milford Sound is a must see and we enjoyed the train ride across the island through their "alps" and the Franz Joseph glacier.
Thanks a lot for your response. We to are going to be takking the train ride across the island and the mountain. I'll try to find the craft place. Thanks again.Kaleo

When you find the craft place, make a point of walking across the square to have a look in the chatedral - really nice work.
Only downside of Cristchurch I have found is the 24hr rugby talkback radio station.
I guess that's a downside if you don't like the Rugby. But it's a hugh thing in New Zealand and Australia. It's a great game, I almost enjoy it more than the NFL.Kaleo

I was over there walking about 6 months after they had lost the semi-final of the world cup to us (for the second time). I spent about 4 hours listening to this constant stream of misery on the radio as the only channel I could get on a cheap rental car.
Mind you - they are doing a lot better than us at the the moment.

New Zealand is *gorgeous*! I went there last January and I am looking forward to going back. Here's some picture I took while there: http://flickr.com/photos/bigfrank/sets/72057594060297594/
I love New Zealand!! Went there with People to People after 8th grade and it is a beautiful country and extremely environmentally minded, we could take a page from their book.

I've been to NZ twice a few years ago and echo the rest of the comments of what a great place it is, especially the south island. Ditto on Christchurch, one of my favorites. The old university center that is now a collection of craft shops is excellent. One shop is a woodworking establiishment and does fantastic wooden rocking horses. I'm also into aviation quite heavy and they have an excellant aviation museum at one of the old "aerodromes". Enjoy your visit, I look forward to my next one. The Christchurch Cathedral is also fantastic, great woodwork, pay the 2 bucks to gain access to the steeple, its worth it. Remember, Dec to Feb is therir summer so lotsa tourists but the kids are in school so mostly adults. If you don't come back with anything else the woolen products are the best in the world and with current exchange rates are very affordable. Watch out, they drive on the left so look right when crossing streets or you'll get nailed.
