Anyone still use HSS circular saw blades
Or is carbide the one and only?
Just curious if anyone still used these for one reason or another. Only benefits that immediately come to mind are:
-Thin Kerf
-Sharpen it yourself
I said “circular” but I mean any round blade, whether you put it in your table saw or your sidewinder (or worm-drive – but that’s a thread for BT 😉
I am asking because I got a Circular Saw Tooth Setter as part of a “remaining contents of the room” auction lot.

For all of my precision cuts I use a hollow ground planer blade (HSS), 7-1/4 or 8" on my 10" table saw.
The set on HSS blades or the clearance behind carbide tips is an invitation to a poor finish.
Jim: I still use reg steel blades on my Table saw, miter box,Radial arm saw, I have a supply of OldHam & Craftsman Kromedge blades on hand mostly Hollow Ground Planer & Plywood thin Rim blades.. I have Freud Carbide Blades too,But still use the Reg Steel blades also...I also have a stash of 71/4" steel blades for my circular saws too..

Jim,
I'm into carbide all the time for the table saw, compound miter saw and skill saw. The only reason I have a couple HSS and well used carbides around is if I should need to do any cuts on used wood that may have ground in sand, dirt or rocks and of course screws, staples or nails. I have a lot of pressure treated edging around my property that gets some rework and additions now and then.
Enjoy, Roy
Jim, I use 8 1/4" steel blades in a worm drive skilsaw when I have to rip 2x material. Easy ripping with a sharp blade. The thinner blade makes it a good choice for ripping thick boards. Most of the time I use carbide combination blades. I can sharpen these steel blades right on the job if necessary.
I will try and post a pic of this thing. It is pretty neat. I guess it is pretty much destined for the shelf unless I run across someone that collects this sort of thing.
I don't think it is appropriate for the "hollow ground planer blade" mentioned. Other than that it, sounds like HSS is mostly a thing of the past.
I have a couple of 7-1/4 circ blades around. I may just run one through it to see how it works.
Thanks to all for responding.Steelkilt Lives!
