John,
Combo tools have their appeal but value isn't one of those. For the price of that combo you can have a 15 inch planer and a 12 inch jointer.
What I dislike about combo's is you must change settings every time you want to do another task. run all the wood thru the jointer and then run it all thru the planner is fine but what if you must switch back and forth between tasks? Chances increase of a mistake..
Grizzley's cheapest 12" jointer with a spiral blade is $3,950, compared to to the $2,295 of the spiral bladed combo. For straight blades the combo is only $1,750, while the cheapest $12" jointer is $1,595. So when you add the $695 for the Grizzley's lowest priced 15" jointer, and that's a beefed up lunch box with a universal motor, $775 for the next model up, you come to a significantly more expensive set of machines.
I can't comment on the new Grizzley machine, but my 16" Hammer combination has worked well. Change over is a snap. It's bed length is somewhat longer than the Grizzley, so having a shorter bed than a separate 16" aircraft carrier is an advantage, not a shortcoming.
LOL. That's the first time I've heard of someone tauting the attributes of their shorter jointer infeed/outfeed tables. Did I misunderstand?
Jeff
The beds on the Hammer are approximately as long as beds on the DJ-20 it replaced. That means long enough for almost all tasks. (I always break down boards to rough lengths before jointing to have the most flexibility in maintaining thickness, so I almost never have anything to joint that is really long.) Full size 16" jointers have beds over 8 feet long. I don't need the extra length, but I do need the space. (I often use wide boards, not long ones, hence the desire for the 16" wide jointer)
I hear you. I have a 12" jointer, and will soon be upgrading to either a 20" or 24" one (either Oliver or another Northfield!) I have been doing some sawing of logs lately, and have some slabs in the 18" to 22" wide range that are absolutely stunning. I'm not in the mood to flatten them by hand, either.
Jeff
Steve,In my opinion it doesn't make much sense to have a jointer narrower than the planer, I am looking now at a combined 20" jointer/planer with spiral head made in Italy by Casadei
http://www.casadeimacchine.com I will keep my 6" jointer/12" planer made by Makita though,
I have room for it, I am attached to it and for quick edge jointing and occasional planing when I don't want to change the setting on the other machine it would come handy.C.
I think your pricing is bit off there Frency. I loved my old Robland J/P/M. Worst move I ever made was selling it. Change over is a snap and it saved a lot of space. Also, the slot morticer was worth it alone.
Hi John,
I agree with frenchy. Plus, the combo jointers beds are very short. A flaw in my opinion.

I have no idea what Frechy is talking about. Combo's are very well built machines. They cost more, and you get what you pay for. Also, if the this Grizzly version is comparable to others on the market, it will be a very good value.

John,
I guess I should have answered your question in my first post. No. I haven't seen or used the new Grizzly planer/jointer combo machine. Grizzly is, however, making some very excellent woodworking machinery today. 10 years ago I couldn't have said that. Great performance, fit and finish, and customer support. Being one of their newer designs I would be willing to bet this combo machine would be no exception.
With that said , choosing between a combo machine like that and separates is really a matter of personal choice, depending on what type of woodworking you do and floor space. Personally I like as long a jointer bed as possible. But if you're dealing with shorter stock regularly then that isn't as necessary. Plus it is very convenient ot go from jointer to planer or back without having to change things around.
Call Grizzly directly. They might be able to put you in touch with someone who has bought that ( they have done that in the past )

Finally a short review of the first Grizzly G0634 J/P shipped in the US.

You might want to try again. I didn't have a problem accessing the thread. Though I am a registered member at Sawmill Creek, my computer didn't log me in automatically, so I think I was "just a stranger" when I clicked on the link above.
BTW, you do have to be a member here at Knots to view the forums. A change from the old place.
