Anyone use a 1/2 sheet sander anymore?
Just curious what advantages there are to 1/2 sheet sanders. I am completely remodeling a house including making all the doors and cabinets and sanding is beginning to be a drag. Currently I am using 5″ & 6″ ROS and 1/4 sheet finishing sanders. After looking at the Bosch 1293D on Amazon I am wondering if it would speed up the process? Any thoughts would be appreciated as I do not want to invest the money for little gain.
Thanks in advance,
Bill

one half-sheet to the wind
I have an old PC half-sheet finish sander that just won't die. The oscillation rate is twice that of the 1/4-sheet model. So, combined with twice the area of sandpaper, one might calculate that it does 4 times the sanding in a given amount of time.
A half sheet orbital sander is the best tool for sanding glued up panels. ROS do not tend to make and keep the surface flat. An orbital sander works much better at that job.
All the professional woodworkers I used to know used them extensively. Probably many have switched over to panel sanders.
just bought one
I'd thought about these, then last week in a new-and-used tool dealership I came across a dual-mode Craftsman 1/2 sheet sander for ten dollars. Seemed too good a deal to pass up, I've been using it on some frame-and-panel doors and it's working very nicely. Glad I bought it.
After seeing all the neat toys there last week I don't know if I dare go back. Running out of room in my shop area.
