Since my wife has no comprehension for my lust for wood (although she likes and often specifies the finished products), I must gloat here.
Last saturday, I drove down to the Jersey shore to pick up a oscillating spindle sander from a cabinetmaker that was retiring. When I got there, I found out he was deaf. This was quite a coincidence, as I also am deaf. It’s not often you can find someone to talk woodworking in sign language. After putting the sander in the truck, he asked me if I wanted any wood, telling me he has some walnut, honduras mahagnony, cherry and some heart pine. I took a quick look into the shop and asked how much, he said $350.
For $350, here’s what I got:
290 BF of FAS 4/4 walnut, most boards 8-12 inches, one 20″
140 BF of FAS 4/4 mahagony, 6-10″
240 BF of mostly clear 4/4 heart pine, 8-18″
110 BF of FAS 4/4 white oak, 4-12″, including 1 monster board, 10′ long, 24″ wide.
60 BF of FAS 4/4 cherry 8-10″
I don’t have a clue what I’m going to do with all of this (the LOML has been hinting at a new bedroom set for the guest room).
The retiring cabinetmaker has much more wood than this in a warehouse, I didn’t see it, but I imagine the quality is the same. If anyone in the NJ, NY, PA area is interested, PM me and I’ll clear it with the cabinetmaker for you to contact him.
woohoo!!

No apology necessary--but you do suck big, really bigtime!
Great story. I can imagine it made the cabinetmaker feel good too. A win-win for you both.
Take care, Mike
Forget being close! I'm in FL, and at that price, I'll be there when he tells me to.
Nice deal. Really nice deal.
At a mean price of $1.42/bf you have good reason to gloat: congrats!!!

And I thought I had a gloat. You out did the 16/4 X 12" X 9.5'walnut I picked up today for 3.40 bf.
You suck! congratulations
Ok Jim,
You suck, I lived in Jersey for 44 years and never got a deal on any lumber of any kind.
Best of luck (you still suck)
Okay...how do you sign "You suck!" ?
: )

Dear lord, what a find! You should be smiling for months over that one.
Pardon my spelling,
Mike
Make sure that your next project is beyond your skill and requires tools you don't have. You won't regret it.
Hey, the Karma gods were with you that day! Have fun with the stuff!
Darn. All gone.
Sorry :(
