I have an Apple iMac G5 – Love it! It comes bundled with Virex, a McAfee anti-virus program. Every time it scans my complete system it reports that I am clean. So far as I know, this is the case. Also, it only updates about every 3 months.
Does anyone have info on the necessity for anything more than the Virex software?
I also use “Virtual PC” to run 2 Windowa programs. I so not have any Windows anti-virus ‘stuff’ since I ALWAYS disconnect from the Web when running in the Windoes mode. Is this really a safe practice?

I have no reason to suspect I have been infected.

This may be something you should consider, though I'm not sure it's appropriate for use with Virtual PC -- works with Bootcamp, Parrallels and Fusion:

I know that Bootcamp only works with new Macs that use the Intel chips. Been with a mac for a little over 2 years now and love it. I will never switch back. Never had a virus and never had the PC blue screen of death, or better said a crash.Kaleo

Thanks Guys. Your comments are comforting. We are a lucky group aren't we? I switched 2 years ago and have not had ANY trouble. When I do "go Windows" to use DataCAD and Family Tree Maker I am reminded of the horrors of long boot time and other irritants.FrostyLet's just keep on smiling.
VirtualPC is pitifully slow. It emulates a Pentium 286MHz. I had three versions of VPC and finally bought a used P4 for less than 1/2 of what I'd invested in VPC versions just so I could run a proprietary app from a vendor I use.
That said, you will open your Mac to viruses if you connect to the internet through VPC. If you just have a few apps that you run offline, you should be OK provided their installers were clean.
Hope this helps.

I agree Virtual PC is s-l-o-w but I don't do anything 'big' with it. Primarily layouts in DataCAD and to check angles on joints or arc lengths etc.I disconnect the satellite USB when I go Windows.*Frosty* Who knows - maybe those viruses can jump just like the big boys tell us the crabs jump.

I have been on a Mac for the better part of 15 years and have never has a virus. Run your disk utilites to keep every thing syncing and you should be fine.

Been a Mac user since 1985 (1MB Mac Plus). We have about six presently. In 22 years, I have never had a virus. There was a time that I used to run anti-virus software but the minimal risk of getting anything didn't justify the effort.
Provided you disconnect from the net before starting Virtual PC, you should have no problems. Likewise, quit VPC before enabling the Mac side.
MainMenu is a little application that cleans up your Mac. It's free and keeps your Mac happy and stable. Although there doesn't appear to be any empirical evidence that repairing permissions does anything to enhance stability.
