i seem to be having drying issues when applying poly (minwax wipeon) to padauk.ive been turning some small tree ornaments and sanding them to 220 and then applying watco natural oil to them.allowing to dry almost twice as long as specified in the watco instructions as i was worried that might keep the poly from drying.after 4 or 5 days i tried applying poly and it remained tacky for 6 days before setting.im only having trouble with this particular species .maybe someone out there can give me some tips on how to deal with this.

How old is the wipe-on poly? Did you shake well prior to application? Just some things to condsider. One does not normally consider shaking a "varnish" type product, but I think Minwax Wipe-On poly is an an exception if I recall correctly.
thanks for taking the time to respond.......i to shake the poly wipe on before applying as i dont apply it very heavy, rather i apply 4 or 5 very thin coats.as for how old it might be..it was purchased a week or two ago and i cant find any expiration date on the can. it dosent present this problem on any of the other woods that i apply it to............thanks again jim!
Try soaking them in Acetone for 10 to 15 minutes to remove the surface wax.

It's Mike in Katy, aka PlaneWood. I live in Katy Texas, named after the Mo, Ks, and Tx railroad. About 35 miles straight west of Houston.
I work with lots of the oily exotic woods. I mostly use Lacquer with a couple of undercoats of dewaxed shellac. Without the shellac I get fish eye. But, don't use shellac under Poly.

Paduak is a very oily wood. Adding an oil/varnish like Watco just makes it more oily. If you do not allow a couple of weeks for the oil/varnish to cure, any topcoat will be a problems. I would avoid the oil/varnish and go straight to your poly varnish finish.
thanks howie............more drying time or totaly eliminateing the watco when useing padauk is probably a good idea!
