Are electric and gas motors hp’s equal
Thinking of replacing an old 8hp WISCONSIN single cyl. gas motor with an electric one.
Was planning to gear down a 5 hp, 1725 rpm for a winch to haul around logs and stuff. Memory being like it is ,think someone told me that, in general, electric is stronger pr. horsepower than Gas,
What are your thoughts on this?
Thanks

I'd say they're close to equal. I'd be concerned that the motor was designed for the duty and the overloads were as well.

In theory the motors ar equal, but as a practical matter they are not. The electric has the capability to put out close to double the hp for short periods, plus the torque is available at all rpms. The gasoline motor must be run at its design speed to put out its hp (max torque is generally at somewhat lower rpm)
