Are these from bugs in my wood slabs?
I have a couple of photographs below that I’m hoping someone can make sense of for me. One set is from a sugar maple slab. I’m fairly certain the picture shows big holes. The area was partially rotted when I got the slabs (or at least it was very wet).
Then, I am showing another photo of a walnut slab with a peculiar pattern. The wood is developing some significant cracks so I’m not sure if the pattern is from the cracks or from some boring bug.

Worms, bugs or fungus are your likely candidates. The walnut looks like worms, the others bugs. Do you really care? If the wood is structurally sound the "defects" just add character. If necessary, they can be filled with epoxy or synthetic wood. I think the "defects" add to the finished project.
Thanks Beasley. I think I am primarily concerned with structural soundness as you say. I’m just not sure how likely it is that I have some “infestation” - let’s call it that - consuming my slabs. Assuming all is well, I’d be glad to epoxy it.
Re: walnut photo. This looks more like the pith of the tree, and not a grub hole or worm hole.
The maple has bug potential, the walnut looks like an old injury or failed limb that the tree grew around.
If this wood was kiln dried chances are the kiln dried process would kill whatever was in there if not it’s problably ok just look around the wood to see if there is sawdust from boring if not you should be good.
