Hi Darrell,
I am planning on building an Elllis-style dining arm chair. This will be my first time to build a ‘real’ chair, but after all the research I think I have all the joinery details down – except for one: What is the best way to join the armrest to the back post? Each post will be 1.5” wide (as viewed from the front). When joined, the armrest looks notched around the front and side of the post. Would twin 0.25” mortise-and-tenons be a good approach? If so, would you pin this joint?
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Yes a small notch ( about 1/4") in the back leg to support the arm would be a good way to go. I might do a single 1/2" tennon instead. The twin 1/4" tenons would add more glue surface but might be a bit delicate and prone to breaking during assembly - also a little trickier to make.
I probably wouldn't pin the joint unless with a very small pin - say 1/8" - anything larger might weaken the tenon.
Good luck with the project!
Darrell
Darrell, thanks for the advice. I have included it in my notes. That completes the design phase!

Chris - post some images whe you are done.

Darrell, I certainly will!
