Arts and Crafts Desk Plans
I’m looking for a decent set of plans for an arts and crafts desk. I’ve searched the forums and came up empty.
Also, I’ve been considering quarter sawn ash rather than quarter sawn oak. I can get it for about half the price of the oak. I’d be interested to know if anyone has had any experience with this “ersatz” quarter sawn oak, either joining characteristics and finishing as well. I believe the expansion coefficients and grain characteristics are similar.
Thanks,

I made a rolling TV stand out of quarter sawn ash. I didn't have any 6/4 for legs but used some burr oak instead. My stand looks browner than white oak would. One really has to look at the legs closely to see that they aren't the same wood. As a finish I just used a mix of tung oil, spar varnish and mineral spirits. Would you fume your desk? The book "In the Craftsman Style" Taunton Press has some pictures of Kevin Rodel's work including desks. I think he has a new book out on the Craftsman Style. I haven't seen it. I have seen his work and it is very nice. I think he has a web site. I wish I had purchased his catalog when I had the chance.

I Probably would not fume it. I would probably use Jeff Jewitt's method as described in his fine piece "MISSION OAK FINISH".
I saw Rodel's work in the Taunton Craftsman Style book as well. I might have some luck researching Spanish Mission furniture rather than Arts & Crafts. This desk is going to have to work for a living.
I think the ash might prove worthy- Thanks for the info.(:-)

just saw your message in may about arts & crafts desk. You mentioned Jeff Jewitte's MISSION OAK FINISH. Is this an article or book I can find. I'm getting into A & C furniture and need info on finishing. Thanks, Bob
The article that I refer to was in Fine Woodworking's earlier book on finishing. Jewitt also has a website to market finishing stuff and his articles appear as well. I am out of town and don't have access to my past links but you should to GOOGLE 'jewitt wood finishing' to reach his site and the articles. Give me a note if you have problems & I will dig out my archives when I get home.
