Arts&Crafts and Japanese design
I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this question but…
I am just a hobbyist wooodworker with leanings towards Arts & Crafts, primarily Stickley Bros., as a style. Some of the designs that K. Rodel shows are an inspiration.
Four years spent working for the Corporation in Tokyo has also given me an interest in Japanese design. Since the two styles can be complimentary (FLWright) I am looking for a good book with Japanese furniture design cues that can help me incorporate them into my Arts & Crafts work.
Any idas on such a book???
Thanks
dan

No ideas, but perhaps you can cast your net a little wider -- Japanese design had an influence on western art (including furniture) starting with Perry's trip in 1854. Lautrec is one well known artist who shows much Japanese influence.
Try searching Amazon, without limiting your search to A&C furniture.
There are lots of books on Amazon (Japanese Amazon) about what you are looking for. But, that being said, you probably should have picked some up before you left Tokyo. I live in Kyushu, in Oita Prefecture, and the local bookstores around here have lots of really awesome books and magazines on interiors, furniture, etc. I'm a general contractor here and also make lots of furniture, and buy lots of books as references..
Right now I'm doing an Izakaya Bar renovation (which is totally new to me, I usually stick to new house construction) and the owner wants it all Asian style. I bought 3-4 books before I started, they had thousands of really nice pics of bars, restaurants, etc. with Japanese and English captions on the sides.
Anyway, good luck hunting for books on Amazon.jp

Dude:
I'm from Nova Scotia, Canada. I've been here for 14 years, but am 100% Canadian! But, thanks for the compliments on my English, I've been speaking Japanese for so long now, I'm pretty sure its probably better than my English.
Good luck with your projects..

Dan,
In addition to the suggestions above look at the Green and Green Architects houses and furniture. Same period as FLW but with interesting curves. You should be able to find books
ASK
Hi, Dan,
Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene are brothers who practiced architecture in S. California in the early 1900's. Their most famous work is the Gamble House in Pasadena. Their style blended traditional arts and crafts with japanese and chinese influences to produce some of the most beautiful homes and furniture ever. I have several books on them, but two would be useful to you.
1. Greene and Greene, Creating a Style by Randell L. Makinson and Thomas A. Heinz
2. Greene and Greene, Furniture and Related Designs by Randell L. Makinson
You can also check out the Gamble House using google. See what you think. Also, Darrel Peart in the Seattle area just published a book on Greene and Greene from a woodworkers perspective.
Best regards, Tom.
