Attaching a wood cookie to a coffee table base
I’m wondering if there is a specific way that a wood cookie should be attached to a base that allows for wood movement?
I know for flat sawn slabs, the wood will expand and contract across the grain, so you should allow the fasteners to be able to move with the wood. Is there a similar concept with cookies?
Thank you for your help.

I believe the cookie will tend to move perpendicular to the grain and tangentially. However, I think the best and maybe the easiest way is to have a base with a flat frame to support the cookie and then drill screw holes in the frame that are significantly larger than the screws. Then insert the screws through fender washers (large flat washers with small holes). This will allow the screws to slide in any direction along with cookie movement.
Thank you @bilyo. That was very helpful.
What is a wood cookie? I've heard the term but have no idea what it is. Can you provide a drawing or a photo please?
Thanks!
A cookie is a log cross cut, a disc from a tree.
Thanks MJ.
Can you get them with chocolate chips or sprinkles on top?
Sure. Those are applied with shellac (it's edible you know).
