I’d like to be able to attach text to one face of a component. SketchUp tries to be helpful by presenting the text to you no matter how you orient the component. Is there any way to lock it to one face so you’d see the text if the component were facing forward but not see the text if it were facing backward?

I assume you are referring to leader text?
You can't do it directly but you could place the text on a layer that is only visible when you are viewing the model from a desired direction. To make this work well you would want to create scenes for different views and the manipulate the layer visibility per scene.
Another option would be to use 3D text which doesn't have to be 3D. If you untick the Extruded box, the text will be flat. The back faces will be shown so you'll want to open the text component and correct the face orientation. These text components can, of course, be associated with a layer if desired.
Thanks for the workarounds. I'd been hoping there was a way to apply text to a surface in the same way you can apply a color or texture. Maybe in the next version.
Well, if you wanted to apply it like a material, you could make an image with the word and then import it at a texture.
Here's a quick example. http://flic.kr/p/dZgnyP
How did you do the glass?
One of your cabinet at the url looks to have a glass door panel in which I see a reflection. Maybe a youtube on that technique???
I have a cabinet in work the will have 3 glass panels and would like to show what is inside or at least a reflection to indicate glass.
Thanks
Forrest
Hi Forrest,
Are you referring to this one perhaps?
So if you want to create the appearance of glass right in SketchUp you can add a translucent material to the faces in your glass components. This won't give you reflections but you can edit the opacity of the material to make it look sort of like there are reflections.
I used a rendering program called Kerkythea (a free program) to render the glass with a reflection as well as to create the softer shadows and the highlights.
Which one of these methods would be of interest to you?
Dave
yes, that is the one
I would like to use only Sketchup for now since I am learning and want to explore its capabilities. So the Sketchup method would be of interest right now.
Thanks
Forrest
Forrest, the simplest thing then is to just apply a translucent mater from the Materials library. There is a small collection of them under "Translucent." Adding something that looks like a reflection gets to me a little more involved. Perhaps that could be my next blog topic.
