Thanks for the help in this thread about 3 (turned out to be 4) lots at auction last night. What a riot. Three of the lots went fairly close to retail (as defined by eBay, LOL). The lot with the #99’s and two bullnose planes went almost twice what I could figure they were worth!
That lot had 2 #99’s, one #90 and a cracked and repaired #92. My guess is those could be rounded up on-line for around $245 plus shipping. The closing bid was $410, and there a ~12% buyer’s premium, bringing the total to ~$459. Sheesh. Did I miss something here?
The spokeshave turned out to be a #151. The surprise was a #95 that wasn’t in the pictures, came with a small wooden plane, looked like a groove cutter. Pretty OK deal there, closed at $95.

So what did you go home with?
Nada! Oh, well, there was a beer tray I took a fancy to, but the woodworking stuff? Forget it, not at those prices, LOL. The bulk of the WWing stuff will come up in a future auction, probably an on-site affair (not at the gallery) but if the same people show up, it'll be a laugher.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Oh well. You know I've always said you can never have enough beer trays:) Do you collect them?
It sounds like a good auctioneer running the show. You probably did well to steer clear.

"Do you collect them?" Nope. Believe it or not, I don't collect anything! I ran an antiques/collectibles store for 8 years, and a sports cards shop for 5, and am so glad I don't have the Collector's Gene, 'cause it's a sure way to go broke! Hubby collects enough for both of us, LOL.
Larry is an incredible auctioneer. I know virtually all of them in the Seattle area, and he's the best. He does about 100 lots/hour, sometimes more. Everything is numbered and cataloged, with a few write-ins here and there. I never worry about leaving an absentee bid -- he won't abuse it. As is always the case with auctions, it's still caveat emptor but he's a good guy. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

Are you after some old Stanleys? If so, I've got an old 3, 4 and 5 I'd part with for cheap. Tom
I am!!

Hey Ryan, nice to see a young antique tool collector out there. I started when i was 13 and now have 600 tools.. getting rid of most of mine on eBay and enjoying the heck out of it. Are part of any tool collector organizations ie. MidWest Tool Collectors, Ohio Tool Collectors?
No, I haven't really got into any of the clubs just yet and I can't hardly wait two more years to register on ebay. Sure is nice meeting all the nice galoots out there though. I'm thinking about looking into some of the groups though. Thanks.

One of the nice things about being a member to an organization like those is that you get put on mailing list for upcoming antique tool auctions in your area. Theres one in mine every 4th of July that I go to that I can find some good bargains.
That would be good for me seeing as I'm in a pretty desolate old tool area unless you count two towns near me that usually have a couple tools. Oh by the way if you ever feel like going to Clarksville, TN to look for tools...don't. It almost amazes me how few tools there are in a town full of antique stores! Just passing on some knowledge.

When I was in my teens I went to a local antique show in Burlington KY. There were tons of tools to chose from and I could end up walking home with a dozen or so. When I went back this summer I only found one guy who was selling tools at a premium price. The rest were few and far between. The best place is still eBay or tool auctions but being a minor you'll have to wait as you legally can't be bound by a contract.
Thats a good 300 miles or so away anyway. Like I said I can still find a couple things every now and then. Sure would be nice to go see Walt's store though, or anywhere in New England for that matter.

Tom, thanks! I'll drop you an email.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
