The absolute worse thing to do is post on the web about an auction you are attending. Now I'm going to attend and tell all my auction friends. Yes FG, I do have friends.

What's wrong with trying to help people? If everyone did this more often, it would be a lot better place to live. Besides, if I want something at the auction, I have the funds to outbid anyone if I so desire. Maybe I will see you there.
Looks like a fun acution, Woodman. I couldn't get plane reservations, or I'd be there! LOL. Have fun, let us know whatcha get.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
forestgirl,
When it comes to handtools, I am a newbie. I have not really made the transition to the "dark side" of woodworking yet. I posted that to see if anyone sees anything that I should buy to have and learn to use. Do you have an opinion on anything you can see and if so, could I have it.
Thanks,
Jeff
I'm pretty new with the handtool thing myself. I've picked up a number of planes at auction over the past several years, and just went through them to sort (keep, toss...).
The most important thing to do, IMHO, is get a handle on what the used market is so you don't overspend! The auction I went to a few weeks ago (and posted here for help first) was crazy. Some guy paid over $400 for a box with 4 or 5 planes which could be picked up, in better condition no less, on eBay for about $225.
I'll look through the auction page you linked today and see if anything specific comes to mind, but in the meantime will also post good on-line resources for info. The first of which is the Patrick Leach(?) site on Stanley planes:
http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan0a.html
The thing is, if you're looking for "user planes" as opposed to collectible planes, you can get them without paying an arm and a leg. Others here will have advice on that, and what to look for.
What other kinds of hand tools are you thinking about??forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
forestgirl,
Just looking for the basics. I bought a #4 in an antique mall about a month ago and with the help of Knots, refurbed it and have had a really good time playing with it.
From what I have read, I would need a #6 for clearing most stock and then a #8 for making things flat. I would like to have some bedrocks, but I can't justify paying that much for a plane (ebay, typically) when I am not a collector or purist. I would like to have a happy medium of power tools and hand tools in my shop.
I appreciate your responses and help,
Jeff
From t he few pictures at the auctioneer's site, it looks like he's seeding something desireable into a box of basic clutter and selling the lot. Sounds like you've done some research and aren't just diving in cold. Good luck with it!!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
You would be surprised...you can find some good deals on eBay especially if you want user stuff, like most of us do. Just don't bid too early. Click on the watch this item button and come back closer to item close. Those early bids are what really drive the price up. A couple of months ago, I bought a solid (although very dirty and rusty) Bedrock 604 for $70. It had a cracked tote which I broke all the way and glued. I re-surfaced and polished all the parts, re-japanned the inside of the main casting and, of course, sharpened the blade. I also took off the finish on the handle and tote and reapplied a matte finish. This thing looks and works great, for $70, and some elbow grease.
I don't mean to hijack the thread, but how do you rejapan something?Jeff
Jeff100,
You are not hijacking the thread. I started the thread and my next question was the same one you just asked about rejapening the plane! I would also like to know.
Jeff

You are about to embark on the addictive habit of collecting, which will last a lifetime. I have many vintage tools, most of them users some are just wall hangers. There is joy in preserving the artifact and well as the joy of using it. Call me crazy! But I often wonder about the history of my tools. Where they have been, who used them, what they have built, and what they may build. It is pretty easy to judge quality vs. junk, So pick what you want to restore and use and have a ball doing it.Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

It's probably his own auction that he is advertising for.
Yes, Miller, I come here all the time asking about planes, how to lap them, how to sharpen the blades, which ones to buy...etc, etc and I waste my time advertising planes I know nothing about. Makes sense to me.
Hey great idea, I can auction all these planes that I don't have and have the auction in another state. Great idea.
WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO BELIEVE THERE ARE SOME OF US THAT DON'T MIND HELPING PEOPLE FROM TIME TO TIME.
I am sorry. I realize that what I said was rude, and I do apologize. I will go out of my way to help other people also, but I usually do it on a more personal level. I don't help people over a public forum because there are too many people that don't appreciate nice gestures. I am sorry if I came off as one of those people.
P.S.> It is so hard for people to belive because for every one person that wants to help you there are ten others that want to screw you.
No problem Miller. It's nice to see someone else my age on this forum. I don't know why, but making contact with "younger" woodworkers is almost impossible. Maybe the craft is too expensive and we are just lucky, I don't know?
At the local school my son attends, they don't even have "wood shop" anymore. I wonder why?
Jeff
I work 1 1/2 shifts and double shifts to support my hobby and my family. I am not sure if I was born with the ability to do this craft as well as some, but I know that the furniture I build should last long after I am gone. I find peace in knowing something I crafted will serve as a memory of me for my family long after I am gone. I have no dreams of getting rich off of my work. All I want is my family to have a reminder, just as I have reminders of my grandfather. It's not so much as me wanting to be remembered as it is my family having something to remember me by if they so choose. I know I would be unhappy if my grandfather had left nothing to me.
wood,
"industrial arts" like I took in high school has given way to "tech ed" , where they put legos together into bridges, program computers, and make robot cars that run obstacle courses. The times have changed. Have to attend a vo-tech school to learn carpentry and sheet-metal skills nowadays.
Regards,
Ray
I've been inspired to rant; begging forgiveness if this is too far off topic.
I feel ya Miller, I work two jobs to support my family, one is more of a tack on (extra duties and hours) so I doubt it is as tough. I have the upmost respect for people like you punching the clock it out to provide for their family.
I can speak with some (only some I do not claim to be an expert) authority about industrial arts as I work in a school. I have a few opinions on this:
To many people woodworking is less relevant than it once was. People either can't afford to or choose not to pay for quality work. Look at today's furniture and cabinets. People want cheep stuff.
Kids do not see it as a viable career option, they do not see the skills as important to their future quality of life.
Running the wood shop is incredibly expensive (and an expensive hobby), and tough choices have to be made. In my state of Michigan we are awaiting the news of how much less funding schools will receive than they were promised. Add in the fact that industrial arts teacher are hard to come by and unfortunately cutting that program can seem like a good choice to administrators who have their back against the wall.
Rant part II
Distribution of wealth. Our country has incredible wealth, enough so that every one of our citizens can have a good life. Fewer and fewer people control more and more of our nations wealth. I feel it in immoral for a man like Miller to need to work extra shifts to provide the basics when others are earning 8,9,10 digits a year. We have the wealth to fund our schools and provide insurance for our children (more on the insurance issue in a minute).
I am not so naive to think that people who have extraordinary talents or have taken great risks deserve to have the chance to earn great wealth because of it, but I also feel that folks who are in a society that has allowed them to earn great wealth have a dept to society.
I could probably go on for quite a while but let me use insurance as an example. I just lost a great secretary because we did not give her insurance. My own children were adopted out of foster care, when we were their foster parents they had Medicare. If your kids are on Medicare good luck finding a doctor, and when you get one, expect the nurses and doctors to look down their noses and to treat you as inferior. Now these two children did not choose to be exposed to drugs and alcohol, they did not choose to be abused, in fact I can't imagine anyone more innocent, yet they received substandard health care. Now that they are adopted, and on my insurance no more trouble finding doctors no more condescending nurses on and on. Why we can't give babies to best health care possible is beyond me. And this is something you can take to the bank; the countless kids out there; the ones not as lucky as my sons, who are not receiving adequate, health care, or an education will have a struggle beyond what most people are capable of.
I may have made it sound worse than it really is. I have a very, very, good job. Forty hours a week pays our bills. The overtime supports my hobby. And by the way my wife is a teacher, and I have never figured out why the people that teach our presidents, governors, and all our important people can not get paid a descent wage.
Miller,
Hear, hear!
-Andy
Trust me, you won't be the only one there. I recently drove 2 hours in snowfall to an auction preview outside of Auburn, Maine that had advertised a "collection" of handtools. Some of the goods were prized. Almost all of it useful. But, in the preview crowd were two dealers (that I know of) and several cabinetmakers. Nothing went for cheap. You're not advertising anything that hasn't already been advertised. The world's not as large as we'd like. Buy what you can. And best of luck...
If I'am not mistaken there are some real keepers there ! A Henry Disston spirit level and a Goodell & Pratt hand drill(red big gear) rosewood crank handle but main handle looks wrong.

With CEO compensation at such an absurd level that even President Bush is chastising them, I think it's time to put a little balance into things, eh?
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I am a union member, and we took a hard hit on our last contract. Our sales are way down. We barely have enough work to keep the plant going five days a week. Yet the company just boasted a 31% rise in profits. Were do you think that profit came from. I will tell you, they stole it from the workers on the last contract.
I do understand and respect your opinion, but I also find it wanting. My former secretary for example; She has a husband who is blind (kind of a freak thing came on all of a sudden) and has stage three cancer. Before her husband lost his sight he had a good paying factory job, the kind that could support a family.
She has a baby with downs, and before she left us no insurance. Her son like my kids when they were in foster care received poor health care. I’m sure no one would accuse this two-year-old child of being uneducated, unskilled or unmotivated. However, because of circumstance beyond his or his parents control this child could not receive therapy.
The shop my wife used to work in nearly went on strike a while back, they settled by taking a cut in benefits. A few months latter the CEO received a 3 million dollar bonus. Just have to wonder if someone might be motivated to put in the same amount of effort if they rewards were say receive a one million bonus and the knowledge that a couple hundred families could maintain their lifestyle.
In my local paper today’s headline is about how people in Michigan pay less taxes. The ones with the largest percentage of break were the wealthiest. Families earning around $50,000 a year received the least.
I really do agree that some people choose to not work. I used to teach in a very poor community, lots of crime and violence. I often thought (right or wrong) that some people need to get off their buts and do some work, but what I’m talking about is fairness. It’s my opinion that especially children should have the resources they need to have quality health care and education.
I’ve been on both sides of the fence. I’ve had no insurance myself, my kids were on Medicaid when they were in the foster system, and now we all have great insurance because my rant is continuing I’ll end with a story that is an example for what Medicaid was like for my sons.
My older boy came with a breathing machine; no one in Child Protective Services could give us any information about it. So, we made a doctors appt at the one place in town that took his insurance. Doc left after spending about 3 minutes with use. “He does not need that machine. He has no problems.” About five days latter were in the ER. Turns out he did have problems. If the doc had taken a few minutes to check his files we could have received the medicine he needed and avoided the trip to the ER. The ER doc pulled some strings to get us back right away to the first doc. “Oh yea he has a very serious lung disorder. Give him this treatment twice a day or you will end right back in the ER” The trouble with the second visit was that he only wrote the script for once a day, when I called the pharmacy to get more they said you need to wait. No problem I said I’ll just call the doc and get a new script. Called 15 minutes before close on a Thursday. Had to leave a message. Called first thing on Friday, “well the doctors are very busy they probably can’t get to it” “I want you to know that if this child does not get his meds he’ll probably end up in ER” “you need to follow direction and give the drug as written” “ARE YOU A DOCTOR, DO YOU HAVE THIS BOY’S CHART?!?” Called the pharmacy next “no problem I’ll grease the tracks for ya” He call back to apologize told me they would not budge. Finally I tell my wife I’m going down there and coming back with a prescription or will be hauled away by the cops.
Doctor part two: New insurance; Back to back 45 minute apt. Because his needs are so great the Doctor used an hour 15 minutes for my older son. New appt for the baby, “15 minutes wont be enough”.
It seems we both agree that our nation is wealthy. My thesis is this: We have enough wealth in our nation to provide for all of our citizens including woodshop at schools and still give people with the talents extraordinary wealth. I’m trying to provide for a family of four on a teachers salary, my wife quite her job because our sons needs are so great. I want to make it very clear that I consider myself very lucky and would not trade my life for anything. I also know that there are a lot of people who are a lot worse off than me who are smarter, harder working and more talented. I wish we could level the playing field and close some gaps.
I'm aware that a knot has had some mud slinging in the past. It’s cool to know that we can disagree civilly. Your sure not gonna change my mind, and I doubt I’d change yours no matter how much I type. Tell you the truth, I like disagreements when they can be civil. If ya ever find yourself in Kalamazoo perhaps I’ll show you my shop and bend your ear over a barley pop. Cheers,
Hey, Jeff, what was the auction like???
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I was wondering that myself. On the day of the auction Michigan was pretty blizzard like. Most of the schools in my area were closed the following Monday. The roads were still bad from Saturdays snow. I'll bet not many people showed up.
forestgirl,
About the best way I can sum this up is Auction Fever! I really don't know what these people were thinking. A simple #7 that was in "ok" shape went for $175????
I also did my homework on this auctioneer and they have a reputation for having, how should I say "Ghost bidders" and I think I witnessed it. Very disappointing considering I drove through " a lot " of snow to get there.
Jeff
That's very disappointing, the auctioneer's rep. Back in the days when I made my living reselling stuff bought at auctions, that kinda crap really p.... ticked me off. My favorite auctioneer is rock solid in that department. I've left dozens of absentee bids with him, and never gotten taken advantage of. The ones who had a habit of using sham bidders never seemed to be as successful as the honest guys, LOL.
Sorry it didn't work out!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
