I’ve read some of the older posts about the icebox plans from Rockler. I’d like some feedback from those who have used them or similar plans.
I’d like to build a 3 door authentic icebox (as a cabinet). But I’m looking for something with a bit of a challenge to it … not your ‘wack it out in a weekend’ type project. I like to build in solid wood (oak in this case) with little to no metal fasteners.
Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

Hi j,
You want to build a 3 door authentic ice box , as a cabinet with little or no metal fasteners . I understand but to me the metal hardware makes the look , instantly you know it is an ice chest with the handles and such.
I think you want it to look like an old ice chest in proportions and style ,somewhat but not really authentic imo.
Look at old ones take some measurements and build it . The plans are most helpful when you are actually fitting the interior for cooling and drip pans .
They are typically frame & panel construction , the sides the back and the doors and even one on the top usually.
BTW I also love the look , and funny but just recently I have begun to incorporate the bead detail used up the edge of the face where it meets the side on some of my work.
Here is a pic of the bead detail ,to me it is old fashioned looking
I was going for the same look without the F&P sides

My description wasn't quite accurate about the metal fasteners. What I meant was screws and nails to construct the frame. I definitely want some nice brass hardware on the doors. I like the looks of the Rockler hardware for that.
I like the look of that bead. Thanks! I'll keep it in mind when I decide on the final detail. I'd also thought about a minimalist carving on the corners of the door frames. But I'll have to mull that over some more.
My Little bro inherited my Grand mothers original ice box. He took it in to get refinished and the fellow drooled over it and tried to buy it from him.
It turned out beautiful. I could ask him for pics and measurements if you would like?
I think the original hardware is available.
Definitely! I'd love some pictures and measurments. Thanks in advance!
Talked to Bro last night and he will be sending pics and measurements next day or two.

While I've never built one, it is on my to do list. Woodcraft has plans as well that you could use as a base and change it to your needs. As to hardware I can reccomend house of antique hardware. I've used them before and its good stuff. I have to admit though that I've looked at a lot of real antiques and they were not that ornate or complicated (i'm assuming you want an authentic reproduction). If not, take the base plans and change them. Good luck on the quest and post some pics. I'd love to see what you finish with!

No date when posted.. I HATE THAT!
When I was a child we had REAL IceBox. My mother always greeted the Ice Man and sent us to our room!
Me and my brother would watch the water drip through a hole and go into a bucket in the basement. Life was good then!
Rockler has one I remember.

Not sure. My brother and I use to watch the water drip out into the basement from the IceBox drip hole in the bottom.
And I remember that my Mom always dressed up on the day the Ice man came with his leather shoulder strap to deliver ice?
EDIT: the Rockler plans looks like what I remember.

I would also appreciate some feedback from those who have used the plans both in terms of the plans themselves and the authenticity (at least external) of the finished product.
In addition, I would love to see some pictures of actual iceboxes (not the reproductions). It would give me a feel for the variations in design and wood. When I work from plans I rarely end up with the "planned" project. I tend to modify to suit my needs and tastes. I anticipate doing so with this project as well but would like it to end up looking authentic. Pictures of variations will give me the parameters to do that.
So if any of you have pictures, please post.
