Congrats...
No expertise, or experience just a suggestion. The cribs that we purchased convert to day bed then on to double beds. If you can find a plan that does than you'll get a few extra years out of the crib.
Essentially the back of the crib is the headboard, and the front is the footboard. The sides are removable and can be replaced with long stretchers for the bed.

Just be sure to comply with the national safety standards regarding the distance between the slats (spindles?) on the sides. Babies have been known to get their head stuck if they slats are too close together. Many older cribs do not comply, so don't take a measurement from an older model.
Congratulations!
Here acouple pics of two i built in the last 8 months .Be sure you have good plans , go over the math , make sure everything balances.I bought these plans off the net ,they were loaded with mistakes.
These convert to a day bed then to afull size bed.Be sure you will be happy with the hardware to change it over.I chose bed hooks for the second one. I am much happier with that than the cam operated ones i got from Rockler. I also used pieces of solid steel drilled and tapped .5w x 1`" x 1/4" thick .mortised into the legs, rather than the threaded inserts. Inserts are fine for throw away furniture IMHO or something light weight they are fine .I looked at a lot of these in stores that specialize in cribs and are put together with inserts.I also seen some pulled apart. If they pull apart it is a difficult repair. On the other hand if one of my steel inserts gets stripped or a screw breaks off ,it is simple to un screw it and insert another.

Rockler sells hardware kits for cribs (not the convertable type).... I've build two using their system....
