do I need to back a 1.5 inch thick MDF substrate for a table? usually I wood but I think I might be wasting my time as the substrate is so thick.

I've always heard, that what you do to one side, do to the other side, regardless of dimension. Seems like it would be better to ere on the safe side.
Yes, you must treat your substrate as a balanced construction, regardless of its thickness. Moisture will warp anything, and this is your best defense. On a conference table, there is no question. I worked in a con. table factory for three years, so believe what I say for your own good.
