I am new to woodworking and I’d be more active if I knew a good way to obtain wood. I am aware of suppliers in Los Angeles (would be a half a day trip) or I’d have my choice of Oak or Poplar at Home/Lowes. Maybe mail order is the way to go but it seems you don’t have much control over the dimensions of wood delivered and whatr if you need 8 foot boards? Any suggestions? I was also wondering who is a good supplier if I just bought a large amount of wood? Thanks, Tom

Tom,
I don't know about Oak but I have seen large quanities (container loads) of walnut for sale in and around Fresno and a few other places down there. I would call up some of the local cabinet shops, there and in Fresno and see who they use. Check with the big chainsaw shops and tree removal services and say you are looking for people who have lumber for sale.
Best of luck.
Try J.E.Higgins Lumber in Fresno
